@BrandonLuuMD The kind of gaming probably matters as much as the hours.

@BrandonLuuMDa cool study where adults (60–85) did 12 hrs of training on a specially designed game, and then outperformed untrained people in their 20s on its multitasking measure

@BrandonLuuMD Need some context here...
An 86 year old performing like a 72.3 year old is great! A 23 year old performing like a 9.3 year old is bad.

@BrandonLuuMDI know a person who plays games 6-8 hours a day and his attention has become incredibly narrow, and generally have severely lessened general cognitive abilities from what I can tell
(just my subjective observations and not an observation about people who play in moderation)

@BrandonLuuMD While the study didn’t officially mention IQ the best estimates from z-scores are ~5 IQ points for frequent gamers, and ~2 points for infrequent gamers.

@BrandonLuuMD Oh look, a random study with no methodology section. It must be true. Let’s sit on our assess and stare at a screen without feeling bad about wasting our precious lives to make money for someone else

@BrandonLuuMD If video games can have this effect on your cognitive abilities, just imagine what a more dynamic game like poker can do...

@BrandonLuuMD You said that in a weird way. Generally a more aged brain is a bad thing.

I was helping a family friend with a yard work project recently, and we rented a skid loader from Home Depot to move several tons of dirt.
It was my first time ever using a piece of heavy construction equipment, so I was a little unsure how it would go.
I hopped in, and it took me about 5 minutes to become proficient at all of the different travel/boom/scooper movements, and crush the project in a fraction of the time we were expecting.
I 100% credit my fast learning on things like this to my early-life video game career.
When we told our parents as kids, "It's good for my eye-hand coordination, mom!" back in the day, we were mostly joking...but it turns out we were 100% correct.
It's also no coincidence that a huge percentage of the most advanced autistic pattern-recognizers I know today are current/former gamers.
Connecting hand inputs to quickly-changing screen stimulus builds unique neural connections in rapid fashion, which would otherwise take years to sharpen using more primitive means.
