Where was Terence Tao when Artists fell?
Where was Terence Tao when Writers fell?
Where was Terence Tao when Programmers fell?

Terence Tao was very pro-AI until recently.

Most even very smart ppl will not pay attention until AI punches them right in their own face.
Mathematician Terence Tao:

"we have to slow down AI. the pace is insane, and there's no reason to be this fast — no reason at all"

It's amazing how willing we are to change everything without any idea what happens afterward

These are extremely nonlinear dynamics

Some clarification for this tweet:

1. It is based off old LOTR meme
2. My main grief is that ppl should pay more attention to AI even if it doesn't directly affect themselves personally yet. Whether it be jobs/x-risk/loss of meaning...

@the_yancoeak for him but I'm guessing he might say that he's more worried about existential risks than the profession of mathematics, and to him mathematics feels like pure thinking/reasoning, in a way that art and writing doesn't, so becoming superhuman at maths is to him a sign that AI has become, or is about to become, superhuman at general thinking, with all the consequences that has.

@alexselby1770 I know it's not obvious from the tweet, but I wasn't trying to specifically pick on him.

And I do feel sorry for mathematicians who have to go through this.

It's just that most ppl do not pay attention until "it's too late"

@the_yanco None of those things have fallen (AI writing is truly awful still), and I think it's ok for Tao to speak on what he knows rather than pontificate broadly?

@yasmeena_khan The frontier is pretty scary good. Look at the Hugging Face incident.

Yeah, I'm glad he speaks about it.
I wasn't trying to pick on him specifically.

@the_yanco Fuck this gatekeeper bullshit. If AI does something better and more efficient it should and will do it.

@Ronenl Well, he had a blast as a mathematician until just few months ago.

You seem to be the guy who will get his face punch next by AI.

@the_yanco If my understanding is correct, you’re anti-AI because you think it could cause human extinction

Artist, writer, and programmer are anti-AI because they could no longer be paid for what they do

@LLMnonymous Well the most pressing issue is human extinction given that AI companies claim to have started RSI

But beyond that loss of jobs (not just artists!) is probably the second most important issue, it just won't fully materialize if the current trajectory of AI Dev holds.

@the_yanco I think his issue is something else entirely, it’s that AI won’t do math as people do it, it’s gonna spoil the endeavor of doing math. It’s that, even if solves theorems it really hasn’t done math. This is a pretty common issue I think, with how mathematicians think math is done.

@jojokompella I don't know man. Seems like a cope frankly.

But honestly my main point with this post is that most ppl simply won't go deep on AI until it punches them in the stomach.

I've got nothing against him, in fact I'm bit of a math nerd myself. But..
