I only have an MA in history, not a doctorate, but I’ve always found the “history as social science” approach to be pretty arid and depressing. I want to think along with the people I’m studying, care what they care about. They are not my lab rats.
Maybe it's just that history is an uneasy fit with the humanities (in many ways it's more of a qualitative social science), but I feel like historians are often figuring out cool new (well, old but new) things through research and the research university model is good for us

It's hard to stress just how unnecessary TFWs are to building and maintaining pipelines.

As a Catholic myself I will say evangelicals absolutely mog us in hospitality and celebrating adult conversions.
Why is there beef between cradle Catholics and convert Catholics at all. That’s not how the Christian religion is supposed to work, like it’s literally in Christ’s words that your tenure is utterly irrelevant.
A lot of these guys see Catholicism as their little ethnic club that nobody else is allowed inside of. Contrarily, evangelicals basically demand an adult conversion experience. There is no “cradle evangelical”. You actually get more clout the more wicked your ‘testimony’ is.
This is why, until we can fix this, they will keep mogging us in conversions. I know a lot of these left leaning ‘cradles’ absolutely DESPISE evangelicals so I don’t know why they hate Catholic converts who specifically left evangelicalism or chose Catholicism over it.

“The publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of justice, and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed him: but you, seeing it, did not even afterwards repent, that you might believe him.”
The Prot guy who spends his last moments praying with his children, singing hymns, comforting his wife, and is remembered as an exemplar of Christ exhibits no evident saving charity whereas the isolated man who spends his last hours becoming RC because of Fatima more likely does

I don’t understand how you can be good friends and coparent extremely well, but not make a marriage work out
Couple things: nobody cheated. We spent 7 years in therapy trying to make it work. We’re still good friends and coparent extremely well. I don’t regret those 10 years.

A calumny against a good man and holy priest. What Pater Edmund Waldstein defends is simply traditional teaching that Vatican II explicitly says it “leaves untouched.” What his persecutors are trying to insulate from criticism is their own personal theology, not Catholic doctrine

I agree 100%, but I wish pro-lifers would stop emphasizing cuteness and tender moments, because babies and children are not always attractive and dealing with them is not always pleasant. And murdering them is not one iota less wicked or deserving of condemnation in such cases.

The case for human WMDs and vigilantes having to register and operate under government sanction is so obvious and incontrovertible that every version of Civil War had to load the dice to make the debate seem like a hard one.

embarrassing, its a book for elementary school children
@bazashc Have you ever read it??? It’s 100% not a children’s book and whoever says that is lying to you. Not only is the vernacular dated and elaborate but the sentence structure and lengthy writing is often hard to get your head around as an adult. Love that book! but it’s not for kidsCommunity noteThe Hobbit is a children's fantasy novel; Tolkien wrote it as a "fairy-story for children" and stated it was "really meant... as a ‘children’s story’" in his letters, and it was nominated for the Carnegie Medal for children's books. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hobbit scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/1247…

For the claim that the Deuterocanon is used by Fathers to prove doctrines? 1 and 2 Clement, St Irenaeus, St Hippolytus, St Clement of Alexandria, St Cyprian of Carthage to name a few
@StNickRespecter @the_thin_place @IFFFMEISTER I haven't seen any good argument for this claim. One person presented a quote from Athanasius, but it was just a single citation of Wisdom in a sea of citations of OT/NT. Meanwhile, he directly says he doesn't use it for doctrinal development.

@ProtPhilosopher This is not a serious criticism. The anathema’s of the 16th are not posthumous decrees against the Saints in Heaven, even those who may have, materially, held to what later was defined as heretical.

This is immediately disqualifying for any genuine discussion of myth and epic, only eclipsed by Mary Beard's faux pas that Homer did not exist.
Absolutely incredible to learn that there's apparently a whole bunch of folks on here who object to the notion that Achilles - son of Thetis the sea nymph, herself daughter of the sea god Nereus - is a fictional character.
Please no one tell them about the tooth fairy.

Every Canadian boy at 2 years old must me measured and if they are 3 ft 1 or taller must be given state funded goalie equipment and training. This situation is out of hand
