Excited to talk to three heroes of mine, all in one sitting!

We will explore how tools, both surveillance and privacy tools, can evolve beyond their intended use cases - as they have before.

Imagine a different future: what if we embraced surveillance, in exchange for security? What would that world look like?

Yay!
10 years ago, we launched Zcash, making a private version of Bitcoin. But the origins go back to the 80s, when, in the wake of the Watergate scandal, cryptographers first dreamed of private electronic cash, and the story runs through Satoshi’s invention of Bitcoin.

Zerocoin came three years before Zcash launched in 2016. We’d written it as a zk-mix for Bitcoin, and then a year later, Zerocash, which introduced SNARKs to cryptocurrency and is now the de facto approach to private payments on chain.

More than 30 years before that, in the early 80s, cryptographers first dreamed of private electronic payments. This was right after the invention of public key cryptography, the Watergate scandal, the Church Committee’s revelations of intelligence agency wrongdoing, and an ongoing fight between the nascent academic crypto community and the government over regulations and alleged backdoors.

It was also right as it became clear that the growth of the internet and electronic payments would pose a major surveillance risk. Today, there are a number of cryptographers who think crypto is simply math, devoid of purpose, and a number of folks in cryptocurrency who do not care about privacy (or perhaps even cryptography). That was not the case in the 1980s.

Starting with David Chaum, cryptographers first designed e-cash, a centralized private payment scheme that required a trusted bank to blindly sign special tokens. These went nowhere: existing trusted institutions, like banks, didn’t adopt the protocols, and no one wanted to trust magic internet money run by a strange company. Then Satoshi invented Bitcoin, overcoming the trust issue by inventing a blockchain. Bitcoin’s key innovation was the blockchain, which replaced a trusted bank with a public database anyone could participate in running. Because anyone could participate, it got off the ground without convincing a bank to run it. But because anyone could participate, there was no privacy: everyone could download the database of payments. And we couldn’t just use an e-cash scheme, as that required someone to keep a secret signing key, and the entire point of Bitcoin was that no one had to be trusted.

This is where Zerocoin, Zerocash, and Zcash come in. They replaced the e-cash system with a zero-knowledge proof and, this fact is not well understood by many, strengthened the privacy of e-cash schemes by giving the recipient full privacy even if the bank was malicious.

In @Apple iOS 27, on all adult phones (not just kids accounts) they have rolled out active image and video scanning.

This is on by default. Accidentally show too much cleavage during a FaceTime and it blurs out the image and cuts audio, then reports it back to Apple.

Those l messages, calls, photos and videos you thought were private? ALL BEING PROCESSED BY BIG BROTHER.

The instigator? Well you can thank eKaren and the Labor government who met personally with Apple and in association with other globalists like the EU, felt they had a right to intercept your personal data and communications without a warrant.

Ai is being used to get around human laws by nefarious governments. x.com/tonedeafandh0t…

On-device ML can detect nudity in FaceTime and blur/pause with a warning. Apple doesn’t receive or access the media unless the user reports it. In Australia, adults who haven’t confirmed age 18+ have Communication Safety on by default.

This week, for the first time, starting to question whether Zcash is really going to be the money of the future.

We have wallet devs attacking other wallets, people trying to stop proposal discussion before it even starts.

Starting to feel like Bitcoin. Not the good parts.

Claude Code just found proof that every app on your phone is listening to your conversations. TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat. they're using what you say out loud to build your feed. i have the data to prove it.

i've suspected this for months but last week something inally check.

i was on a call with my friend and told him i'm thinking about breaking up with my girlfriend. didn't text it. didn't search it. just said it out loud with my phone on the table. two hours later she opens TikTok next to me and her entire feed is breakups. "signs your relationship is over." "how to heal after a breakup." she looked at me and said "why is TikTok showing me this." i said i don't know. but i did know.

i connected my iPhone to my MacBook and ran Claude Code that same night.

it scanned every app's background microphone activity for the last 90 days. not just the apps that asked for microphone permission. apps that were supposed to only have access to photos or location but were activating the microphone anyway.

what it found:

→ TikTok activated the microphone 347 times while the app was "closed" in the background
→ Instagram → 211 background activations
→ Facebook → 189
→ Snapchat → 94

every activation lasted between 3 and 15 seconds. enough to catch a sentence. every one of them tagged a keyword and cached it locally on the phone with a timestamp.

Claude Code pulled the full keyword cache:

→ "breakup" — tagged 4 hours before her feed changed
→ "moving out" — from a conversation with my mom last Tuesday
→ "wedding venue" — from a call with my sister about her engagement that i never searched once
→ "protein powder" — said it out loud to my roommate, had ads for it within an hour
→ "flight to tokyo" — mentioned it at dinner, saw travel ads the same night

those keywords were sitting in a local cache on my phone organized by app with timestamps. TikTok had the most entries. Instagram was second. every single keyword matched a conversation i had out loud near my phone.

the scariest one was "wedding venue." my sister told me she's getting engaged on a private call. i never searched it. never typed it. within a day my explore page had engagement rings and venue tours.

then Claude Code checked a second phone in the same room. my girlfriend's. same keywords. same timestamps. both phones were picking up the same conversation and tagging it independently.

i asked Claude Code how to shut it down. it mapped every app's microphone access and built a permission audit.

what i did:

→ revoked microphone access from every app that doesn't need it to function
→ disabled background app refresh for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat
→ turned off "Hey Siri" which keeps the microphone in passive listening mode 24/7
→ revoked "nearby interaction" permission which uses ultrasonic audio between devices

Claude Code confirmed all four apps lost background microphone access after the changes. i checked her phone too. same steps. took about 3 minutes per phone.

within 48 hours both our feeds went completely random. generic content. nothing personal. nothing from our conversations. that's when i knew for sure it was real.

the full step by step and the prompt are in the first reply. takes 3 minutes. save it so you don't lose it and send it to anyone who's ever said "my phone is definitely listening to me." it is. now you can prove it and shut it down.

"they want zec to go up in price, but they do not support the mission of building freedom/privacy money for everyone. big difference.

if supporting "highly polarizing groups" (as i saw some people describing this initiative) is wrong, there is no reason for zcash to exist. it's meant exactly for highly-polarizing and maginalized groups."
some people are mad about the $ZEC dev fund funding projects like this one (quoted post).

these people call themselves privacy + freedom advocates, but they are now only proving themselves as privacy/freedom larpers.

dev fund exists to fund community initiatives that would hardly receive funding from traditional methods (like in seed/private investment rounds).

the dev fund exists to fund development and foment zcash adoption as freedom + privacy-enabling money among different communities and geolocations. especially for those who need it the most.

zcash is money for everyone.
even for the people you (for some reason) hate.

if funding adoption awareness among a group of people who really needs privacy/freedom money is the death for zcash, then zcash deserves this death.

it isn't, though.
it's the very reason why zcash exists in the first place.

many zcash supporters (especially the ogs) understand that.

those who believe zcash is privacy/freedom money are not only not bothered about this, but understand the importance of funding and promoting zec for groups that are more exposed to social/political persecution. and they are excited about more people getting to now and use zec.

most people opposing it are tourists, speculators, and extractors.

they want zec to go up in price, but they do not support the mission of building freedom/privacy money for everyone.

big difference.

the thing they ignore is that zec's ability to sustainably go up in price depends on its adoption. and it means that some people they don't like will end up using the coin.

if supporting "highly polarizing groups" (as i saw some people describing this initiative) is wrong, there is no reason for zcash to exist. it's meant exactly for highly-polarizing and maginalized groups.

onward.

A few takeaways from our recent podcast with @DeFi_Dad

1) One man's paranoia is another man's peace of mind

One of my favorite things about Zcash: I know how paranoid the people building it are. They spend their time thinking about edge cases most users never will. That’s a feature. Sometimes it feels like a bug (slow), but that's like saying pre-flight checklists are a drag on flying 🫠

2) Privacy is a basket of tools

While I prefer Zcash, I want other privacy projects to succeed too. Supporting privacy means supporting people being able to configure their choices to their practical needs. Different transactions call for different guarantees and tradeoffs 🌻🪻🌸🪷🌼🌺

3) On our redemption arc

Tidbit: when I joined the Sovright (fka ECC) board at the end of 2023, we agreed this was our last shot. Do or die. Runway was thin. For a long time, the job was staying alive. Now we, and the other Zcash orgs, can fund new work and bring in new, best-in-class talent. It's exciting! ☀️🚀

Holy shit, the Anthropic S-1 is out! They're finally opening the kimono:

- They warn that their AI could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity. Very on brand.
- Founders keep 50.1% voting control.
- They still lost billions in the first half of 2026. GAAP net loss evenue, but actual loss was probably closer to $5B-9B.
- Hundreds of billions of dollars locked-in compute commitments, mostly non-cancellable.
- Revenue growth: $41M (2023) → $386M (2024) → $4.6B (2025) → $16.3B in H1 2026. ~900% net retention. Holy macaroni!
- Two customers accounted for ~20% of H1 revenue. Close to half of their tokens are sold through Google and Amazon.

This thing is a monster. I don't even know how people are supposed to value it fairly.

A great side effect of the AI apocalypse is that we can finally hold engineers at tech companies responsible for half-assed promises
Claude Code found every "vanishing" photo from Instagram and every "self-destructing" message from Telegram on my iPhone. both apps promise the content disappears after you view it. neither one actually deletes it.

i plugged my iPhone into my MacBook to run the same backup audit de Code flagged two folders i had no idea existed.

the first one was Instagram. a cache directory with every single photo and video anyone ever sent me in vanish mode. every "this will disappear after you close the chat" photo from the last 2 years. 11,400 files. all still there. all viewable.

the second one was Telegram. every self-destruct photo. every secret chat image with a timer on it. every video someone sent me that said "this message will self-destruct in 10 seconds." 3,700 files going back to 2022. not one of them actually self-destructed.

what was in those folders:

→ vanish mode photos from my ex that were supposed to disappear the second i closed the chat
→ self-destruct videos from a friend that had a 5 second timer on them
→ photos i received and never even opened that still got cached
→ voice messages from Telegram secret chats set to auto-delete after 30 seconds

15,100 files in total across both apps. every single one was supposed to be gone forever.

the apps remove the message from your chat. your phone keeps the file. any app with file access can read it.

i checked my permissions. 31 apps with Files and Folders access. weather apps. QR scanners. free PDF readers. a calculator app i downloaded in 2021. any one of them could have been looking at every "disappeared" photo i ever received this entire time.

the check takes 2 minutes:

step 1 → plug your iPhone into your Mac → run a backup
step 2 → paste the prompt from the first reply into Claude Code
step 3 → it scans every cached file that should have been deleted → shows you the total count by app
step 4 → go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Files & Folders → revoke access from every app you don't use daily

i went from 31 apps to 4 in two minutes.

and if you ever sent a vanish mode photo to someone else → their phone cached it too. there is no disappearing message. there never was.

save the prompt. check it today not tomorrow.

Banks started blocking AI agents this week. The builders answered with robot arms.

These are racks of real phones, each with a mechanical arm tapping the screen like a human finger.

This is PhoneUse, built by Abdulla Ababakre. It gives an AI agent a phone of its own.

Most apps and the rest are learning to block them. A real tap on a real phone leaves nothing for the app to flag.

The direction is clear: if the software door closes, agents will walk in through the front door.

I had the same idea but I didn’t find enough ppl to ugh
A few months ago I hosted a cybersecurity "Ugh Day" (a group chore day) for my friends.

The format worked so well I think everyone should steal it:

1. List the accounts/devices that would be most devastating to lose… bank, email, phone, etc.
2. For each one, find its “weakest link” an attacker could use to get in.
3. Turn those into a todo list and fix them.

We found things like:
- someone was using their phone without a password. and their phone had unrestricted access to email and 2fa. meaning if they lost their phone someone could steal everything.
- someone was using as their recovery email an insecure Hotmail account made at age 10
- someone was still using as their ex lover’s email as a recovery email

So much low hanging fruit to fix!
I think a lot of people feel dread and avoidance around personal security, doing this together really helped.

@Suhailard several OAI people say there are unfixable bugs in hardware that are exploitable by AI models directly speaking machine code so even if we could solve software that’s not enough. We need defense to move faster than offense if that’s even possible we may just have a new normal that requires adapting to insecure software (bank transfers require going into a branch and taking a dna test 🤣😬)

i love this

Human agency cannot be taken away

Freedom needs room to breathe. People must be able to think, associate, doubt and change their minds without having every hesitation recorded and turned into leverage. We build encryption, private credentials and ways to prove what vealing everything.

We demand honesty about whom we are dealing with. A machine must not counterfeit a human identity, a relationship of care or spiritual authority.

Consent must mean something. It must be understandable, freely given and possible to withdraw. A buried clause cannot authorise unlimited power.
