Am I overthinking this? Because I am genuinely struggling to understand what is happening in Nigeria.

@inecnigeria has disregarded the Electoral Act by failing to publish the voters’ register online for public scrutiny, even after the statutory 90-day deadline has passed.

Even under Mahmood Yakubu, the register was published online, with a mechanism for complaints and objections.

Today, NOTHING!

And somehow, the country has moved on like nothing happened.

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?

Apart from @ARISEtv and @fijnigeria, where is the Nigerian media?

Where are @YIAGA, @EUinNigeria @EU_SDGN , @NDI and the other civil society organisations?

@NigeriaNDCHQ .@ADCNig ARE YOU PEOPLE SLEEPING? Are you actually preparing for this election?

This is the voters’ register we are talking about. THE VERY FOUNDATION OF AN ELECTION!

INEC has effectively said, “To hell with public scrutiny. Do your worst.”

And our collective response is SILENCE.

I am genuinely pained.

We complain about electoral malpractice and compromised institutions, yet when it is time to demand accountability BEFORE an election, everybody suddenly goes quiet.

Must we wait until votes are cast and results are disputed before we start shouting?

Seriously, am I the only one who finds this silence deeply disturbing?

Good thread to learn a bit about the different ways in which investors could supercharge your new venture.
If your product made $170k in 10 days, why take a $500k angel check when in 30 days you could be well onto making $500k or more in revenue.

Having agents at every polling unit is the most important thing a political campaign should be working on right now.

INEC’s deadline for submitting agent names is only three months away.

Agent mobilisation and recruitment should not be based solely on loyalty. Agents should be and technology should be deployed to manage the process.

Pay 25% once an agent is onboarded, 25% after they show up at their polling unit on election morning and are geotagged within the area, then pay the remaining 50% immediately after they upload a copy of Form EC8A to the candidate’s portal.

There should also be redundancies: backup agents for polling units and a live operations team that immediately follows up where an agent has not checked in.

By election morning, the campaign should already be able to see exactly how many agents it has on the ground and where it has representation.

No middlemen. No “leader” disappearing with agents’ money on election day. Payments should move directly from the campaign to the agents.

Most developers know that avg latency is misleading and they should use percentiles instead. They also know that if 90tile response time is 200ms, then 10% of the requests had response times higher than 200ms.

Well, the last sentence is false. Or rather, true in theory.

The only way to calculate true percentiles is by sorting and scanning all the data. Since this often means many millions of datapoints, we actually don't do that. We approximate. With histograms.

How does that work? You create buckets of values: 0 to 0.05, 0.05 to 0.25, 0.25 to 1, 1 to 5, 5 to infinity.

Then you accumulate: number of data points, sum of values and the number of data points that fall in each bucket.

Now, if I ask you for the 90tile value, you start going over the buckets from lowest to highest latencies, and add the number of points in each bucket. Once you go past 90% of the data points, you know that your 90tile value is in this bucket. Then you give either the middle of the bucket or the upper bound as the estimate.

Note that you don't know what % of the data is higher than the estimate. And also note that the quality of the estimate really depends on how the data ends up distributing between the buckets.

It isn't uncommon for ntiles 90, 95 and 99 to all fall in the same bucket (if your distribution is "heavy tail"). And sometimes all or most of the data falls in one bucket and you can tell nothing.

I recently had a case where we noticed the 99tile of response time for a specific request type was 10s. This was both high and suspicious - we have a 10s timeout in some places. But we couldn't find any request that hit these timeouts in our logs. Super weird! Until a smarter colleague realized (by looking at sample traces) that 10s was just the lower bound of the top bucket. The requests actually timed out at 60s. This allowed me to find the timeout they actually hit and fix the issue.

So the lesson is: Averages are misleading. But percentiles are usually approximate and can be misleading too! Be careful not to trust the data blindly.

Owning Up to Leadership Failures and Political Responsibility

This morning, I listened to the British Prime Minister’s speech announcing his planned resignation in July. As a keen observer of global politics, my primary interest lies in examining what successful nations do right and the structural factors that cause others to lag or struggle with governance and development.

The Prime Minister’s planned resignation comes amid mounting public frustration over a stagnant economy, a worsening cost-of-living crisis, and a perceived failure to honour key campaign pledges.

Looking inward in our dear country, we can recall our own situation. Before 2015, our President on several occasions championed the call for the then President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over economic hardship and insecurity affecting Nigerians. During the Chibok school kidnapping incident, he demanded the immediate resignation of President Jonathan, arguing that the government had failed in its most fundamental duty of protecting lives.

During the 2023 election campaign, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made several promises, including improved electricity supply. He also challenged the electorate not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments—particularly in providing stable power, fighting corruption, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.

At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased. Similar concerns are reflected across other critical sectors such as security, infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts, all of which have regressed. We are in the worst possible condition.

I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance. Such a gesture would help enthrone a political culture rooted in accountability and responsibility, rather than further entrenching impunity. It would also send a powerful message that public office is a sacred trust, not an entitlement, and help build a society in which future leaders understand that failure carries consequences. Only by ending the culture of impunity can we secure a better future for the society our children will inherit in a New Nigeria that is possible. -PO

Absolutely proud of this double achievement by Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman!
Terrific actress through and through!
I have really enjoyed seeing her in Tinsel, for example, right from its first season.
Linda Ejiofor makes history at #AMVCA12, winning both the Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards for her roles in The Serpent’s Gift and The Herd respectively.

She had previously won Best Supporting Actress in 2015 for her role in The Meeting.

Everyone is talking about Showmax's losses. $270 million in a single year. $6 spent for every $1 earned. That's all true, but it's not the entire story of why Showmax is dead.

Showmax is dead because its model clashed with its new parent company Canal+.

Merci
