There's nothing kind about letting good people live in a fantasy world that no longer exists. You have to tell them, even if it hurts. Because the sooner they accept reality, the sooner they can adapt to the future.

@dhh What if you tell them but they choose not to listen?

@RichKleinAI Then I've done my part, and they've done themselves in. When reality finally becomes undeniable, they'll know.

@dhh Accepting reality is one thing, but we don't have to just lie down and take it. We may not be able to change the whole world, but we can carve out a piece of it and make it bend to our will. Sometimes the sheep will follow, sometimes not, but that's OK too.

@neocrius Agree. We've always had people opt out. From the Amish to punks.

@dhh You're right. But I think it's good to give people some time and don't do a hard cut-off. Not everyone can adopt that fast. Some (the majority?) needs some time. Not everyone has some million dollars on their bank account and many need to feed their families.

@hirschnase The more time you need to adjust, the more important it is to get started on that adjustment early. And the hour is already late.

@dhh I watched your Rails World keynote yesterday and I agree that AI is the present and future, that manual coding is nearly dead. How will this impact @37signals search for employees tasked with building applications? Clearly, the old way no longer applies.

@dhh @unclebobmartin Keeping a fantasy going is being nice.

Helping to get rid of delusions is being kind.

A person who lives in a fantasy sees less than a blind one.

@dhh Being right about doom is a terrible prize. Happy to hear someone call the doomers out.

Being delusionally optimistic about the future is the only way to go.

@dhh @unclebobmartin My suspicion is that this is going to be an incredibly painful transition for many. Gone are the days of abundant jobs for reclusive code-monkeys.

You can no longer expect to be handed a problem to solve. Problems must be sought out & unearthed by *gasp* talking to people.

@dhh The problem isn't the prediction. This is like telling people an earthquake is happening when they are already being shaken. That's not truth-telling, that's assuming the room is slower than you.

@dhh I started in Assembly language & a Heathkit. Then Fortran. I hand-punched card decks. That was 1980. I've manually built Karnaugh maps to reduce logic for control systems. No advancement in software has come close to AI. I am 1000X more productive.

@dhhle seem to think that just because the tools change, we shouldn’t learn the fundamentals.

Keep learning, but by all means use the best tools and tactics available to you. If you have a tank at your disposal, use the tank, not the musket.

Reminds me of the British dying with “honor” against guerrilla fighters during the Revolution.

@dhh When the printing press first appeared, scribes burned them down.
Then sound became a part of film, musician unions raised hell to stop this new technology.
Change = pain for many people.

@dhh Umm... you don't have to tell them. That's up to you.
Sometimes the milder approach works better. Because it gives people space to find out by themselves and not just simply be told.
