Celebrating Academic Excellence and the Human Side of Scholarship.
A little appreciation for @SsaliSarah PhD, First Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Makerere University.
Recently, I shared a photograph of her, and nearly 100 messages followed from people whose lives students, colleagues, and admirers spoke of her mentorship, intellectual influence, the late hours she keeps, and, above all, her genuine love for her students.
I have always enjoyed our conversations. They are intellectually stimulating, thought-provoking, and I invariably walk away having learned something new.
More recently, we have been exploring conversations around Asian Studies and the Uganda–China relationship, particularly the role African universities can play in shaping knowledge, cross-cultural understanding, and meaningful academic collaboration.
The true measure of an academic is not simply the knowledge they produce, but the minds they shape and the curiosity they inspire.
Professor Ssali, your impact clearly extends far beyond the lecture hall. Thank you for your generosity of intellect, dedication to scholarship, and commitment to the next generation.
Diplomacy connects nations, but scholarship helps them understand one another.

Great academic leadership @Makerere School of Law
The DVCAA Prof. @SsaliSarah today presided over a training on use of Clinical Legal Education Methods for continuous assessments in Uganda’s Law Schools at @MakerereLaw.
The interdisciplinary training brought together academics from the School of Law, @MakerereCHS, @MaKCEES, @IUIUac, @UCUniversity and featured Students' Lived Experiences.
She rallied participants not to view the training as an academic exercise but a capacity-building initiative with tangible outcomes. "You are expected to leave this room having designed or revised at least one clinical continuous assessment activity for a course you teach, and to become champions of this new approach within your respective institutions."
The training was facilitated by Prof. Christopher Mbazira (@bazzira) the Coordinator @MakPILAC, Dr. Dianah Ateenyi Ahumuza (@AteenyiDianah) Head Clinical Legal Education (CLE) among others.

Effective representation defined. Well done Hon. @BruceKabaasa
Thank you very much Rt. Hon Deputy Speaker @Thomas_Tayebwa for visiting #Rubanda County West today and participating in Bulungi Bwansi. The road we have worked on today is a very important link between #Ruhija Sub-county and Ruhija Town council; It is also a gateway to major ies in the wider #Bwindi Impenetrable National park which is home to the treasured mountain gorillas.
On #wealth creation, we thank you for the guidance on #SACCOS and your seed support to kick start this initiative. We look forward to more collaborations with you in lobbying for power and water to this very important tourism eco system.
We look forward to hosting you again Sir. @ProfNawangwe @SsaliSarah @KP4Rukiga @EvelyneNinsiim1

Well done @TrevisMuhwezi for the effective representation. @Makerere is super proud of you.
Today, I had the honour of leading a delegation of student leaders from @Makerere University to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of the @Parliament_Ug , where we presented key concerns affecting the welfare, dignity and experience of students.
1. Government Students’ Feeding & Accommodation Allooncern that a government-sponsored student currently receives UGX 760,000 per semester, of which UGX 540,000 is allocated for feeding.
When broken down, this translates to approximately:
Breakfast — UGX 500
Lunch — UGX 2,000
Supper — UGX 2,000
That is UGX 4,500 per day for food. In a city like Kampala, where the cost of living continues to put pressure on students, we questioned whether this amount is sufficient to provide a student with three adequate meals a day.
After accounting for feeding, only UGX 220,000 remains for accommodation. With the prevailing cost of student accommodation around Makerere University, this presents a significant challenge, particularly for students who are not residents of the University halls.
We therefore called for a comprehensive review of the government feeding and accommodation allowances. As an immediate consideration, we proposed that if the broader review cannot be undertaken immediately, the feeding allowance could be increased to UGX 10,000 per day, alongside an increase in the accommodation component to UGX 760,000.
2. Halls of Residence for Female Students
We also raised the issue of accommodation for female students at Makerere University. Female students constitute 51% of the student population, yet they currently have only three halls of residence.
We therefore proposed the construction of an additional female hall of residence to help address the accommodation gap and provide a more sustainable solution for students.
As part of this proposal, we suggested that the new hall be named “Mama Janet Hall,” in honour of Mama Janet Museveni.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker acknowledged the urgency of the matters raised and indicated that they would be worked on.
As student leaders, our responsibility goes beyond representing students within the University. It is to carry their voices, lived realities and aspirations to every platform where decisions affecting their future are made.
