Striking sentence by Ian Parker in @NewYorker:
"He made the case to me that, given his past psychiatric condition, revealed in his attempt to kill a student, restricting his access to students is a clear violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act."

You’ve heard about rogue agent swarms, but how is AI enabling cybersecurity defense? Here’s my report for @IEEEorg @ComputerSociety.
Thanks, Matthew Butkovic at @SEI_CMU, Gabriela Ciocarlie at @FollowStevens, Cristian Rodriguez at @CrowdStrike, Sam Rubin at @PaloAltoNtwks, Michael D. Siegel at @MITSloan, Scott Woodgate at @Microsoft. computer.org/resources/ai-c…

In “You Can See Everything,” something about the Abbott & Costello scene puzzles me. Spoilers ahead.

One possibility is that @ElizabethHolmes genuinely had never heard of “Who’s on First?” (remarkable) and, after watching it, didn’t understand it (astounding).
Another is that she merely pretended to not understand it (also astounding).
One problem with the latter is that at first she said she did understand it. Only when @nathanfielder pressed did she display confusion. But maybe she didn’t think of faking confusion until after his initial questions? I need to see the scene again.

Packing squares seems to be having its moment, so I took a crack at it...
I found 25 new square packing records using evolutionary LLM program search, similar to AlphaEvolve.

Researchers worry that AI is homogenizing cognition and culture.
We may fall prey to groupthink, @em_wenger warns: “We have suffered as a society when we silence or ignore edge voices.”

@em_wenger Another method to increase diversity in LLM responses: x.com/carrieyuanjiay…
🧬 "In the course of evolution, nature has gone to endless trouble to see that every individual is unlike every other individual."
Yet LLMs are forcing us all to be alike by giving us mode-collapsed, homogeneous responses.
We propose a multi-agent RL method to fix this. 🧵

One of the most heartwarming messages I saw at Burning Man this year was on a big flag on a man's bike:
"SPREAD CHEEKS NOT HATE”
I mean, who doesn’t love to smile? :-)

The 1960s chatbot, the authors write, “embodies a particular historical moment in both computing and psychology, reveals sophisticated understanding of human conversation, and demonstrates how even primitive AI can raise profound questions about understanding and intelligence.”

How imminent is recursive self-improvement (RSI)? Researchers asked AI to conduct AI research and write two papers. The results left much to be desired.

Was this @nytimes metaphor written by AI? "As with a mail distribution hub, putting computing power closer to users enables A.I. models to think longer, respond more quickly and complete more complex tasks."
Data-center proximity doesn't affect a model's ability to think longer or do more complex tasks. And what does it mean for a mail hub to think longer? nytimes.com/interactive/20…
