reducing prayer to some sort of stress reduction intervention has to qualify as a form of idolatry, right
Prayer is one of the oldest and most research-supported interventions for trauma and mood disorder symptoms across cultures and faith, but y’all aren’t ready for that conversation yet. The human brain likely adapted to mindfulness and biofeedback since we worshipped the sun.

there's a specific house in china i dream about maybe once a year that i'm fairly sure is not real. there's a family that lives there and i'm not related to them, i just somehow keep finding myself in their house, accidentally falling asleep in their living room, or accidentally babysitting their kids, or other strange adventures in this dream house i don't remember
i often have the experience of going somewhere in a dream that i’ve been to many times before, but only while dreaming. i have the strong sensation that i have dreamed of each of these places many times, but it seems more likely to me that somehow the experience of intense familiarity is just baked into the current dream.
i’m not a big dream journal believer (i think forgetting dreams is a useful feature we should allow our brains to engage) but i’m considering starting one just to figure this out. seems like that could itself bias my dreams tho.

recs from a friend who works in cybersecurity:
> keeping all your devices on the latest update is the single most important step. It's never mattered more.
> Password managers are great, including the built in iOS one. Doesn't have to be fancy!
> do a periodic offline backup of can't-reps.

What are people's favorite summaries of the current security situation, with easy punchlists for what security actions everyday people should be taking right now?
(afaict I'm ahead of the curve on this stuff and while I'm sure I can use reminders about which vulnerabilities to patch, I'm mainly asking for easy summaries to share with loved ones)

everyone on chinese twitter is my brother and i love them. feeling proud to come from this great nation of cracked horny degenerate vicious posters

actually acknowledging the work involved in parenting small children requires giving up some or all of your childhood story about your parents, and people do not like doing that bc it's kind of uncomfortable, and if they don't have kids they don't have to
it is fine if people / acquaintances don’t understand that what I do - raising and educating children, taking care of household affairs - is work
it is rather tough when folks both don’t understand this and complain about how it is hard to schedule time with me

if you really think about it amanda actually lowkey groomed us in mean girls. she's one of the people who taught us which expressions and vocal tones mean what
You feel relieved when Seyfried first appears in YCSE because you can read her expression and vocal tone but then you also remember that its her job to convey recognizable emotions through the screen and that we've been trained all our lives to respond to cinema's visual language

demanding that psychedelics never make you feel bad is nearly identical to demanding that life itself never make you feel bad
The by far biggest problem of many ~non-physiologically-toxic drugs like psychedelics is their hedonic inconsistency. Anyone who ever had a bad trip knows what I’m talking about. Imagine a psychedelic where you could guarantee that valence will never dip below neutral.
Why not just trip willy nilly? Why shouldn’t you take psychedelics like candy? Hedonic inconsistency. This is their biggest flaw. Valence enhancement is the most potent lever for safe psychonautics.
I’m not the first one to formulate this insight, David Pearce has been talking about it for years, but still, worth reiterating.

Regarding the PHP vulnerability, I have seen some security researchers recommending people limit web browsing for a few days (due to the potential for common websites to be compromised via this vuln).
There is exploit code available for this vuln, though it is not known to exist “in the wild.” But with the weaponization of AI, it’s possible that the discovery and broad distribution of exploit code could happen fast - possibly reverse engineered after the patches are released.
I expect cyber security providers of web application firewalls and exploit prevention services will have protections deployed quickly today, and IT teams will be busy patching and upgrading.
And I think it may be wise to lay low on the Internet today. Do what you need to, but probably skip frivolous browsing.
Also:
Make sure you are running full service anti-virus / anti-malware on every device (including phones). I recommend BitDefender for home/personal use.
Update your browser apps and only use Safari, FireFox, or DuckDuckGo. No opinion about Brave (people keep asking). Make sure ad blocking is turned on and auto play of active content is turned off.
Be very cautious of links you receive in SMS messages, message apps, and email. Check and verify the source first and check the URL to make sure the website domain is as expected.
Keep your operating system and all applications up to date, and watch for new updates over the coming days. Regarding iOS, I do not recommend upgrading to 27. Stay on 26 and update as possible.
Make sure you have MFA turned on for all websites or online accounts. True MFA. Passkey has a major design weakness so I do not recommend it.
This is all to protect your devices and your accounts in case a website you visit is explored and does attempt to steal your credentials, information, or deliver exploit code to your device.
@PractiveSec will be following this today. Advisory coming for customers.

I think there are some issues in the recent “Already Clean” essay, and I’m concerned it may have incorrectly updated people on important safety-relevant questions.

welcome to life kids, here’s your screen. you absolutely have to learn how to use this thing because your entire professional and social life will be plugged into it. just don’t get lost in the infinite addiction portal that is also on there for some reason haha ok kids have fun
This is an incredible project: NBC News asked parents to check their kids' YouTube history during school hours — and the results show kids are spending huge chunks of the day watching videos that have nothing to do with learning

i think this is not quite granting her enough agency. after reading various other takes and pondering i think her pattern with men is something like displacing her animus onto them - maintaining her innocence by finding men who embody displaced aggression, ruthlessness, etc.
FWIW, I think she is a deeply autistic, deeply traumatized person who fawns over narcissistic abusers and is a willful accomplice in what she romanticizes as Bonnie and Clyde-style love story.

this is really good
> Here’s what I think is going on with Elizabeth Holmes: She has an extremely severe form of the defense mechanism that Melanie Klein called splitting—dividing self and world into unambiguous “good” or “bad.” She cannot admit that she has any bad qualities: anyhness, any tendency to deceive others, or even any of the more positive forms of aggressiveness like ambition. On her account, her motivations are all benevolent, idealistic, and noble. She even says she never lies!
...
> But I think it’s too simple to present Holmes as the victim of predatory men—again, this would be a form of splitting—instead, I think the men in her life embody aggressive qualities she cannot acknowledge or integrate in herself. Her entire identity is organized around an idealized image of herself as a benevolent visionary, while aggression, destructiveness, and guilt are split off, disavowed, and projected onto others. This is how she preserves the fiction of her own innocence.
...
> I don’t think the distinction between conscious deception and sincere delusion quite captures Elizabeth Holmes’s psychology. I suspect that she’s not fully conscious of her own deception because she has constructed an elaborate system of defenses against recognizing the truth. I think she is psychotic, not in our ordinary sense of the term, meaning hallucinations or elaborate paranoid fantasies, but in having a fractured relationship to what Jacques Lacan called the symbolic order. She doesn’t relate to language, and therefore truth and falsity, in a normal way.
...
> In Lacan’s terminology, psychosis results from the foreclosure of the Name-of-the-Father: the failure of a fundamental paternal signifier to become integrated into the symbolic order. In ordinary psychic development, the father functions not merely as an actual person but as a symbolic authority, introducing a mediating principle that allows the child to differentiate itself from others and establish a relatively normal relationship to language, law, and desire. You bear your father’s name; you are like him in some way, but you know you are not exactly him. Your relationship to him is mediated by metaphor: you can take his place without being him. This distance allows you to become your own person. But in psychosis, this symbolic function is absent or disturbed, and the subject may instead rely on more immediate, imaginary identifications.
...
> Holmes’s relationship with her father becomes especially interesting in light of this. At one point, she reads aloud a strange piece of her creative writing where she imagines becoming engulfed or identical with her father. There’s also a remarkable biographical parallel: her father worked at Enron, a company destroyed by a notorious corporate fraud, while also pursuing humanitarian ambitions—he worked as the head of green energy there. Holmes appears to have reproduced this peculiar combination of corporate ambition and philanthropic idealism almost literally. It’s as if, rather than relating to her father through a symbolic identification, she attempts to be him, to repeat and rescue what he was trying to accomplish.
