Tim Sweeney is criticizing Valve again over Steam’s requirement for developers to disclose their use of generative AI.

The Epic Games CEO called the policy “abhorrent,” arguing that developers are being forced to make a “political statement” that could be used against them by a s been criticizing the policy since 2025, previously comparing the disclosure to a “Scarlet Letter” and arguing that AI will eventually be part of almost every game production process.

@Pirat_Nation As a consumer, I demand the right to know which developers use AI so I don't accidentally give them money. If that means avoiding 99% of AAA slop in the future, so be it.

@Pirat_Nation Valve wants users informed of what's in the game they might want. Valve also doesn't want to dictate strict requirements for Linux users to play games.

Epic wants to hide AI usage in games and install a rootkit (EAC2) on Linux PCs. Which gaming company do you trust more?

@Pirat_Nationuld be alot cooler if this guy would shut the fuck up.

Disclosing AI use is not inherently bad.
If you make a game thats good enough, I promise you the 12 dozen performative cry babies will be drowned out by the wave of gamers who play to play.

Gaming shouldnt be about politics, when I come home, I want to relax.

I do not give a shit if the game I play was made by a group of dudes, or a single guy using ai.

So long as its got a fun loop and its not dogshit slop, Ill play it.

Though, if you do use ai to make your game, dont charge regular price.

@Pirat_Nation Honestly, if developers have to disclose that they have AI in their game, I believe that they have to disclose if they have DEI/LGBT+ in their game.

Disclaimer: I don't see AI as political.

Picking a chain to build on also means picking your users. Picking five means five codebases and five audits.

On Frame you deploy once and can reach users on every connected chain.

@Pirat_Nation I’ll say this again.

If the dev is proud that the game is AI-generated, then shouldn’t they be happy with the “Made with AI” label? It should be their badge of honor.

@Pirat_Nationwner of a confectionery factory I agree with Tim! When I have to disclose if the ingredients of my products contain things like “rat droppings” or “toxic metals” I have to disclose it on the packaging and all this is don’t bus organising a hate mob against my tasty treats.

@Pirat_Nationeeney, but lately he seems increasingly out of touch with his own company's products and policies.

Your own marketplace, Fab, requires creators to disclose AI-generated assets. Why is that transparency acceptable when developers buy assets, but suddenly “abhorrent” when consumers buy games?

@Pirat_Nation I personally don't give a shit if a developer used generative AI while making their game, but I appreciate Steam requiring the disclosure for people who do. All I care about is if the game is fun and if its worth what I'm being asked to pay for it.

@Pirat_Nation See, if he really believes AI is no problem and will soon be part of every game he'd have no problem disclosing. If they have to hide it they know you hate it and they know it won't get into everything.

@Pirat_Nation Everything should be disclosed about a game.

I want to know what game engine is used, what software was used to edit audio.

I think this would encourage better competition between tools. If more successful games are using a particular tool, then that would make one wonder why.

@Pirat_Nationites code for a living now uses AI. If you don’t it’s like saying you use a horse and carriage to get around today. It’s table stakes. It’s a tool and if you’re not using the most up to date tool at your disposal, you’re behind.

I have been a software engineer for decades. I use AI to write code, to write tests, to review code, to triage bugs, etc. It’s just the current tool.

@Pirat_Nation I am pro-AI in software development and I believe consumers have a right to know how AI was involved in the production of software. The issue is a hot-button one, and people want security and transparency. That's not a hard thing to achieve.

@Pirat_Nation it's literally just a label telling me what's in the thing I'm buying

if your game is good nobody cares. if you're scared of the label that says more about the game than any "hate mob"

this is why Steam keeps winning, they side with the customer
