Wake up.
Every profession deemed white-collar, the middle class dream, is about to be decimated by AI, at a much faster pace than anticipated, with monstrous social consequences.

@LayoffAI Apocalypse still looks a long way off though. Even 10% unemployment would not be apocalyptic.

@LayoffAI A lot of entry-level positions have gone overseas. I see it every week in tech/telecom. I don’t believe for a second AI is the cause of all this, especially since offshoring has accelerated to GCC’s in Indi@.
When will @USDOL @USLaborIG do something about it?

@LayoffAI That's just the start. All these jobs can be automated, and they will automate them because paying for tokens for AI agents is cheaper than giving people benefits and a salary, vacation time. It's sad.

@LayoffAI So why do we still have H1-B, with 70% of the visas going to entry-level workers?

@LayoffAI It's foreign workers not AI that's causing the problem currently and has been for over a decade and perhaps longer but AI will be a big issue in the future.
I often speak with grad-student aged folks so I hear the real stories in addition to the government statistics.

@LayoffAI say it, but this is becoming increasingly evident. The entry level and even middle run professional positions that recent grads could use to climb their way up the ladder are either being replaced by AI or consolidated into fewer positions supported by AI. Whether new opportunities will arise after a period of adjustment remains to be seen, but even if that happens, it won't be until after significant displacement. Either way, our current college-oriented culture doesn't seem sustainable, which, I guess, could end up being a blessing in disguise.

@LayoffAI 22–27yo grads with the whole workforce mixes education with age. It might show that new graduates are struggling relative to the overall market, but it won't isolate the degree effect.
Comparing college graduates with high-school graduates, both ages 22–27, gives a different veland Fed). College graduates still had lower unemployment, although their advantage is narrower than before.

@LayoffAI This happened when I graduated in 1991, it was the worst job market for college grads in over 30 years.

@LayoffAI If we cut the entry level, where does the next generation learn judgment? Somebody has to redesign the first rung.

@LayoffAI The 42% underemployed number is the one that stings. Those degrees were priced for jobs that aren't there.
The grad still carries the loan, just paid from a smaller check, and every year in a job that doesn't need the degree makes the jump up harder.
