In this life Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.

In DC supporting my colleague Maria Cuellar who is giving the 2026 Mark Kleiman Innovation for Public Policy Memorial Lecture. A good quote at the National Academies of Sciences from Einstein about the responsibility of researchers.

I guest lectured in two friends' course at Stanford last week, and my same material took 50% longer to cover than the prior year because they implemented a no tech in class rule, which led to a big jump in student engagement and questions.
Higher standards = More learning.
It’s the most brutal class at Harvard—and suddenly everyone wants in. No AI, no finance. It's a big dose of western civ and classics.

Great to see.

The Royal Sonestas in Portland and Minneapolis have sold at over 90% discounts. Neither downtown really came back after COVID and riots, and both cities have high property crime and understaffed police departments.

Another spooky season film recommendation: Les Yeux Sans Visage is a bizarre and beautiful French horror classic directed by Georges Franju, master of fantastique.

It’s not affordable.

There’s no way to make it affordable.

Western culture may revolt at the notion, but the primary caretakers for the old will always be… their kids
I genuinely don’t understand how ordinary people are supposed to afford assisted living for their aging parents. Some facilities charge upwards of $10,000 A MONTH. That’s $120,000 a year just to make sure your parents are properly cared for. How is the average family supposed to afford that?

Spectre of the Gun is in my top 10 favorite episodes of Star Trek TOS, not least because it gave @GineokwKoenig one of his best turns in the series. RIP.

For those who doubt official police records, this report finding a 25% drop in violent crime uses survey data from 240,000 people across the US. This is an unprecedented crime decline.
According to preliminary estimates from @BJSgov's NCVS, violent crime declined by 25% in 2025. It's another data point joining many others indicating a massive crime drop over the past few years. bjs.ojp.gov/library/public…

This is beyond disgraceful. Gambling is a cancer. Prediction markets even worse; they will cause more athletes to cheat, more to be threatened if they make or miss foul shots or play for fewer minutes. Less confidence in integrity of the game. Shame on the NBA and Adam Silver.
The NBA has reached deals with Kalshi and Polymarket to make them the league's preferred prediction markets partners. The companies can now use NBA IP on their platforms, while the NBA gets right of approval on markets that they offer. That and more:

To get in touch with the Real America, I'm here at a diner in rural Ohio on journalistic assignment with The New Yorker. Next to me is an alienated, hard-working woman on assignment from the Atlantic and a crusty father of 4 on assignment from Harper's.

During an annual physical, the M.D. looks at the patient's chart
M.D.: There's good news and bad news.
Patient: What's the good news?
M.D.: The lab test says you have 366 days to live.
Patient: If that's good news what is the bad?
M.D.: I forgot to tell you at last year's exam.

Some pundits express strongly held opinions on complicated issues they heard about 60 seconds ago. The rest of us have the luxury of investigating before opining and should take advantage of it.

Most Americans massively underestimate the extent to which Europeans are simply much poorer.

We're ageing, racking up welfare costs, but without the productivity to pay for it, thus borrowing more, on adverse terms.
The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean. buff.ly/5cLtnha

A cynical attempt to goose turnout.
I am voting against the foie gras ban because I want to discourage people from investing money in future DC ballot initiatives by making them think "even if we have a reasonable idea, we'll probably end up losing like those foie gras people."

Take it up with the Council!
