a car just did something straight out of science fiction and half the internet immediately started debating commercial viability

not every engineering achievement needs a fucking business model. you are allowed to experience wonder

@JonathanHaasothers only flew 16 seconds on their first flight. But that paved the way to entire new world.

On its own the flying roadster is cool, but doesn’t have much practical application. But it opens up the door to exciting new possibilities in the future as it improves

@JonathanHaas The people bitching about commercial viability have no vision. Just from a safety perspective (avoiding collisions, navigating obstacles, near-instant braking, etc.) it will be as transformational as seat belts and air bags.

@JonathanHaas It's not science fiction; Hawker Siddely demonstrated the same concept in a far more practical form nearly 70 years ago.

@JonathanHaas Commercial viability?

Every man who can afford one will buy one

So it's commercially viable almost regardless of cost

@JonathanHaas There are also very practical implications for the level of force control shown while going upside down. So those people are already just clueless

@JonathanHaas The Wright Brothers were laughed at a 100 years ago (or so) when they flew their plane 100 feet. Who would want to fly? Imagine what Elon has unleashed for the next 100 years?

@JonathanHaas saddened at how many people are hating on this. Whatever happened to amazement and excitement ? This is incredible, its so over the top that I am still wrapping my mind around it. The follow-on applications are mind blowing. And people can't just sit back and enjoy the moment? Sad.

@JonathanHaas These people are self reporting at a monumental scale. Imagine them being in positions of authority over others. Very negative and dishonest people. Definitional haters.

@JonathanHaas thing, so they can’t allow themselves to appreciate anything coming from Elon. That would force them to confront the uncomfortable possibility of being wrong, which they would never admit. That’s why we’re witnessing different stages of reluctant acceptance, from “fake video” to “useless and impractical.”

@JonathanHaas And frankly, wonder is the business model. Only the ultra wealthy will afford it, but they will pay for the engineering progress that facilitates advancement for the masses, as it should be

But it is also really freaking cool.

@JonathanHaashe sad part of modern business. Everything is profit driven, The question of 'should' gets answered before an exciting idea is even out of infancy.

But this stunt injected so much excitement and wonder into inventors and entrepreneurs that I think the status quo will change

They must always find an explanation of some kind to fit their worldview.

@JonathanHaas No, it's commercializtion masquerading as a viable product.

Shit is cool, but stupid. It's like watching Jackass and saying you'd do better.

@JonathanHaas It's very cool. I don't think anyone would make a fuss over a concept car & a marketing demonstration but Elon has alluded that the car will be for sale (whereever/whenever it is road legal)... thus the commercial viability chatter. So excuse the noise. We'll see what happens.

@JonathanHaas It's like people don't realize they lost their sense of wonder and part of them is dead inside, and so announce to the world that they see the world as dull gray now and think they're being edgy and real.
