Apparently the latest Pixel phones fake their zoom function with an AI image model. If you "zoom in" it will just make up details that don't exist.

@AndrewCurran_ @IsaacKing314 This is a specific sore point from lived experience.
I had Samsung devices that would or could not capture a true likeness of a child's skin rash during a severe allergic reaction.
It effectively airbrushed for beauty, ruining the opportunity to collect evidence for the MD.

@IsaacKing314 Soul brother to the Chinese phones whose cameras are good for taking clear pictures of the moon at night
Until that same moon image was also mistakenly overlayed onto images of the solar eclipse. They're faking their camera improvements.
Found it:

As a radical moral anti-realist and liberal I broadly agree with Beff's position here, but I think the overwhelming majority of people do not. Hitler only wanted to kill ~1% of humanity, compared to Beff's 100%. Most people would not invite Hitler to their parties!

It also depends on the party. For a personal party, I think it's ok to only invite people you like. For a large event it becomes more unethical to exclude people due to unrelated characteristics. Note that Beff was allowed to attend Manifest!

Still happy to go on record as predicting that AI cybersecurity capabilities alone will not cause any catastrophic damage to the internet or society.
There will be some hacks in the short term. Definitely back up your data, diversify your assets, update to the latest versions, etc. all the boring good ideas, but cybersecurity favors defense. Any serious software project is already using AI to red-team themselves prior to release, and even if the exploitation rate increases a bit, the maximum amount of damage that one compromise can inflict hasn't changed.

Whenever I'm faced by dozens of local businesses that offer the same service and no way to tell which are the good ones, I use the filter of "email them all and see who responds". Works quite well to get the list down to one or two.

I have no particular reason to believe this is correlated with quality of work. I do have reason to believe this is anticorrelated with the amount of frustration I will experience attempting to communicate with them in the future.

It is shocking to me the number of businesses who list an email address on their website that they apparently do not check.

Currently arguing with a company over whether their blog post advertising a feature implies that their platform should include that feature.
Their support emails are AI-generated, even after I asked for a human. The entire website is AI-generated. Their API docs tell me not to bother reading them, just paste their "integration prompt" into my AI. The founder posted an AI-generated article on Twitter talking about how AI runs the company.
I'm growing increasingly confident that their AI made up a feature that does not exist and wrote dozens of articles advertising this feature in various countries that they do not support.
When I asked their AI assistant to enable this feature on my account, it told me the feature doesn't exist. When I pointed it to the company blog post announcing the feature, it began responding in Chinese.
This company received $6 million from Y Combinator.

I think many people don't realize just how big today's AI ecosystem is. There are dozens of new startups with an explicit goal to advance AI capabilities getting billions of dollars in funding *every day*.
A unilateral pause from a couple of the leading companies might be a good idea to buy us a few months. At best it could be a credible signal to regulators. But it's silly to pretend this would have any lasting benefit in and of itself.

I'm seeing the Overton window shift this month. More & more of my sources are starting to say out loud: Hey Anthropic/OpenAI, you could just stop unilaterally! That'd be good! You're not playing 11-dimensional chess or a classic prisoner's dilemma, you're playing Russian Roulette

Reminder that mainstream society routinely prioritizes animals over humans it’s just that, unlike EAs, they do it in an insane and inconsistent way
California hasn't built its bullet train because the state has required 130,000 pages of environmental reports, making absurd demands like:
• counting bumblebees one by one
• rebuilding woodrat stick huts
• hiring specialized dogs to sniff lizard scat

I complain plenty about Oakland city government. But at dinner 2yo swallowed something wrong and started choking. She was still breathing, but with difficulty. When she couldn't talk or make sounds above a whisper we called 911.
You're not supposed to do the Heimlich if the airway is only partially obstructed, apparently, but this meant there was nothing to do at all except stand there and encourage her to cough. "Yell," we would suggest to her between coughs, and she'd make these concerning little whistley sounds.
I think the first police officer was on our doorstep in like 3 minutes, and a fire truck and ambulance within 5. Of course the minute they arrived she coughed successfully and was completely fine.
But if she hadn't been - and when this kind of thing happens it's impossible not to play out what happens if it hadn't been - help was minutes away.
Sometimes it feels like I owe more to our civilization than I could ever possibly repay. I write blog posts, and raise kids, and if I ever need it a dozen strangers will be at my doorstep with unfathomably complicated emergency medicine. I am grateful to the cops and the firefighters and the paramedics and the city of Oakland. I will probably sentimentally vote for some of the bond issues I was on the fence about even though we already have the highest taxes in the Bay.
She's fine. We sang happy birthday to her Mommy a couple minutes later, and she sang the loudest.
