The amount and brazenness of fraudulent attacks on Pangram that I see are truly staggering.

If you still have a living grandparent, try talking to them like they’re your peer. When people get old enough, their families stop learning anything from them and start talking to them like they’re children
A few bowhead whales born around 1815 might still be alive. They were in their 30s when they first saw a commercial whaling ship; in their 60s when they first heard a propellor; over 100 the first time they heard sonar. I wonder if they remember the silent ocean.

the reason moby-dick remains such a vital piece of human art is that it addresses what is probably one of humanity's greatest collective atrocities, the genocide of the whales, with an ambivalence it cannot itself fully articulate. melville is distraught, but he can't explain why

@ratlimit This is bc the month names mostly come from latin numbers aka septem means nine, octem means ten, marchem means 3 etc.

We’re more sensitive to “rise” than “run” (both perceptually and conceptually). A 9:16 rectangle looks taller than a 16:9 looks wide. Your visual field has a horizontal aspect ratio, so a vertical extent eats a bigger % of its axis than a horizontal one.
People have such north-south brainrot. A location will be 50 miles east and 10 miles north and people will go "oh it's north of here." Technically true, but why would you say north when it's much further east? This has happened everywhere I've lived. Is there anywhere with an east-west bias?

Side note - vertical axis sensitivity shows up in writing systems. The typesetting era gave us “Mind your p’s and q’s”, not “Mind your p’s and b’s”, even though both pairs are reflections of each other. Vertical deviation (p↕b) is innately more legible than horizontal (p↔q)
