A PM raising awareness and money for a cancer charity is a good use of a PMs time...whether it's in his "free time" or not.

Much rather our PM do that, than getting pissed breaking lock down rules.

There was an awful lot of noise this week from journalists, broadcasters and commentators about Andy Burnham appearing on Gogglebox. Accusing him of not taking his role as PM seriously.

Worth remembering many of them cheered this clown all the way into Downing Street

Burnham just has to raise Freedom of Movement and the massive lies of the Leave campaign start again. Any minute now Penny Mordaunt will pop up to claim that the whole population of Turkey will arrive in the UK if FOM is reinstated. They lied in 2016, don't be conned again.

Chris Bryant, "I have this warning for Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch. They say they'll bin the European Convention on Human Rights"

"They've clearly never read the Good Friday Agreement, or maybe they don't even care about it"

"I promise you this: we will not dump the ECHR, we iew: The ECHR isn’t some bureaucratic inconvenience. Human-rights protections were deliberately placed at the heart of the Good Friday Agreement because equal rights, enforceable in law, helped build confidence between communities after decades of conflict.

And there’s a wider principle here.

If a government says the ECHR prevents it from doing something, perhaps the first question shouldn’t be: how do we get around human rights?

It should be: why does what we want to do fail to meet these basic standards of fairness, liberty and equal treatment.

And is it really something a democratic government should be doing at all?

🇪🇺 MYTH BUSTING: What does EU membership actually mean?

Apparently, I need to explain this one.

I'm Canadian.🇨🇦

I live in France.🇫🇷

France is an EU member state.🇪🇺

So I have a rather convenient vantage point from which to observe what EU membership actually looks like in everyday life.

And no, France did not surrender its country to Brussels.

Here’s how it actually works.

🇪🇺 EU countries remain countries.

France has its own government, president, parliament, courts, taxes, police, military, immigration system and constitution.

The EU has powers that its member states have voluntarily given it through treaties. EU institutions can legislate only in areas where the treaties give the EU competence.

🇪🇺 European Parliament?

EU citizens elect MEPs every five years. The last one was in June 2024.

Those MEPs, together with the Council representing national governments, make EU legislation in the areas where the EU has authority.

France currently has 81 MEPs.

Canadians don't vote for them simply because we live in France.

Because we're Canadian.

🇪🇺 European taxes?

There isn't a Brussels income-tax collector knocking on French doors.

France collects French taxes.

The EU budget is primarily financed through contributions from the member states, customs duties and a small VAT-based resource.

🇪🇺 Immigration?

EU citizenship gives EU citizens freedom to live, work and study across the Union.

That's one of the major benefits of membership.

But that's not the same thing as abolishing national governments or national immigration systems. The EU and its member states share responsibilities in migration and asylum policy.

🇪🇺 The euro?

Being an EU member doesn't mean you necessarily use the euro immediately. Several EU countries still use their own currencies, while Denmark has a treaty opt-out.

🇪🇺 Schengen?

Also not the same thing as EU membership.

That's why Norway and Switzerland can participate in Schengen without being EU members.

🇪🇺 And EU law?

Yes, EU law matters.

That's rather the point of joining a union.

Member states agree to common rules in agreed areas because they want the advantages of a single market and common standards.

But those rules aren't simply dreamed up by some mysterious unelected European bureaucrat.

The EU's legislative system involves the European Commission, the directly elected European Parliament and the Council, where national governments are represented.

And here's the really important bit:

Canada isn't being offered EU membership.

It has been offered the possibility of becoming the EU's first “associate member.”

✨️That status doesn't currently exist.

✨️Nobody has published the rulebook.

✨️Nobody knows yet exactly what rights, obligations, institutional participation or financial arrangements it would contain.

Those details have to be negotiated.

So when @PierrePoilievre tells Canadian waitresses and welders that they'll be forced to pay taxes to Europe, obey European bureaucrats and accept European immigration policies...

✨️Ask him to show us the agreement.

Because I'd really like to read it.

I've been living inside the EU.

I can tell you from personal experience:

Brussels has not taken over my kitchen. 😂🇨🇦🇪🇺

And somehow, despite all these years living in France, I still know exactly which country I belong to.
