100 years ago this October, the city of Lynchburg, Virginia, dedicated Municipal Athletic Park, located at 12th and Court Street. It was the first home game of the 1926 season for Lynchburg College. The match-up pitted small-town Appalachia against mighty metropolitan Washington, DC, and after a thrilling conclusion, onlookers hailed it as the greatest me ever played. In the fall of 1962, the Bluefield Beavers, under the guidance of Merrill Gainer, and the Graham G-Men, led by Lawrence H. “Burrhead” Bradley, each won state titles in the top divisions of West Virginia and Virginia, respectively. However, when the two rivals met in e both schools had shared since 1936—on September 7, the Beavers prevailed 22–6. A major momentum play for Bluefield that night was a fake punt, in which “little Timmy Sarver,” as he was described in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, scampered forty yards for the touchdown.
Thirty-nine years later, that same Tim Sarver, now the head coach at Harrisonburg (VA), used that same fake punt against Graham once more, this time in the 2001 state championship game. The Blue Streaks scored from forty-four yards out and secured the Group AA, Division 3 crown over Glynn Carlock’s G-Men, 24–10.
