Maybe Europe should try the radical idea of cooling the air inside buildings before blaming the planet for the consequences of not doing that.

Just a thought.
Climate change killed 32,000+ people in Europe this summer.

Trump believes this crisis is a "hoax." Republicans in Congress are following their "Great Leader.”

NO to Trump’s fossil fuel agenda. YES to creating millions of jobs by moving our energy system away from fossil fuels.

And then everyone starves because you have no idea how to run a business.
I will just point out that Communists don't tax the rich.

And if you seize the means of production you can't have this problem.

Good day.

I'd point out that communist voters often seem to understand communism less than anyone else. Hence the term useful idiots.

They imagine abolishing private ownership means abolishing the wealthy and powerful, apparently without considering who takes ownership, who controls production, who distributes the wealth, and who decides what everyone gets.

They think they're abolishing the ruling class by handing it control over the entire economy.

And somehow expect to be the beneficiaries rather than its subjects.

@ShamashAran I was imagining:

It's the same pretty much everywhere with rent controls. A story from Berlin:
True in Spain too. Every landlord in Madrid and Barcelona screens the renters now. This is an obvious consequence of rent control. The most vulnerable, ostensible protected by the legislation, are in fact excluded from the rental market: if you cannot be evicted for non payment, then you are too risky a renter.

Betting markets thought Thomas Massie was going to win reelection until he didn't.

Betting markets thought Francesca Hong was going to win the Democratic Wisconsin gubernatorial primary until she didn't.

Betting markets thought Lula would win the Brazilian presidential election until he didn't.

Maybe stop getting your opinions from Midwit Powerball players?
I have several mutuals who have bet literally thousands of dollars (possibly tens of thousands at this point) on Paxton winning.

The idea that someone like Talarico, who believes White skin is a virus and that we should govern the country like a big kindergarten class, could win a Senate race in Texas just seems totally unbelievable.

And yet, the betting markets give him an overwhelming advantage and he has led or tied in every single poll since the end of the summer, bar one.

Someone is wrong here. Either the market participants and pollsters are about to be humiliated, or our political landscape is going to be shattered in a way that few people are prepared for.

Late-stage mixed economy problems: Obese people think they are food-insecure
"Food insecurity" is a misleading term.

If you didn't know any better, you'd imagine it was associated with chronically missed meals.

The food insecure are actually considerably fatter!

This is truly bizarre. Arday was a fraud, a grifter, a manipulator and used accusations of racism to cover his fantasy.

His death doesn’t change that.

He is not a martyr.

And claims he was hounded in an unprecedented way - are false.

And in response you are apparently trying to say ideas you don’t like should be suppressed?

Is this socialism? It looks like socialism - of the kind Eastern Europe endured for decades.

And politically, while plenty of Tory MPs drive me up the wall and have views I dislike - the Labour Party has far too many ideologically driven authoritarians who represent a threat to democracy and freedom for my liking.

And yes - she is that. Because we were (thankfully) taught this. As soon as you try to silence people you personally dislike, using appeals to emotion and sentiment - you’re on the road straight to authoritarianism.
Barely two months ago, we lost Professor Jason Arday. Thousands grieved. Institutions across higher education spoke about inclusion and belonging.

Now Nathan Cofnas is being given a room at Oriel College, Oxford, to ask whether DEI is undermining higher education.

The post below is from the Democratic mayor of a lefty New Hampshire town.

When immigrants are right-wing and White, all of the sudden Democrats sound like blood-and-soil nativists.

This is the core reason Dems want to flood NH (and the entire US) with foreigners:

foreigners vote for big government, high regulations, high taxes, and redistribution (i.e. the Dem platform).

It seems pretty clear that the midterm is going to be rather disappointing for Democrats. Now, we don't know how disappointing.

Them walking out of November with control of the House of Representatives is a very real possibility.

But the Senate was never great, and now seems unlikely.

The more interesting question is why this happened.

They had every advantage.

A polarizing figure as POTUS who was unabashedly pursuing his agenda, controversial parts included.

Trump told parts of his electorate to go fuck themselves, several times.

All the stars aligned for the tables blue wave. A blue 2010.

Yet it didn't happen.

I can't help but think we were told why this result would come to pass.

We really spent a whole year reading polls from extraordinarily friendly Dem outlets where Dems were polling at 25% approval. On a good day.

And instead of sounding the alarms, everyone focused on whether Trump's approval was 35 or 45%... despite both of these numbers far outstripping 25%.

Everything about the midterms can be related back to that one data point.

Hot take: the voting age should be lowered to 16. If you'll be an adult for the majority of the next administration, you should have a democratic say in it.

Technically, schools can never be “fully funded” anywhere, because no matter how much money is poured into them, it will have little bearing on what schools are ostensibly supposed to achieve.
Unless you're running a pension fund, "fully funded" doesn't mean anything as it's a moving target.

The implication is there's some objective standard of need, a need that is satisfied by money, and we just aren't meeting the requirements out of spite.

But more than just the basic lesson of marginalism and "you can always spend more", Democrats don't even want to operationalize what full funding means, because any definition can only undermine advocacy.

If full funding is whatever meets some standardized test performance target, this legitimizes a despised measurement that makes some schools look bad and reflects group disparities. If it's grades, well you can always inflate grades without spending any money, which evidences that grades are not informative.

So any such public system seeks to be measured by the consumption of resources itself. Hours of instruction, teachers-per-pupil, students per sq. ft. of floor space, average age of textbooks. A bunch of things that aren't good measures of outcomes, but which you can always make incremental progress on by spending money without having to reorganize the system.
