I wasn’t going to bring up marriage and family, but @angela_rye opened the door so I had to be honest about both why—and where—I do my work. This interaction is why it is so important to have conversations that cross political and ideological lines.

@DelanoSquires @angela_rye Black marriage rates are not declining. All marriage rates are increasing. The decline is seen from the sample pools. Did you know they surveys 15 year olds in those marriage surveys? How many of them are married? 15-21? Stop believing these lies! Look closer at these numbers!

@coolbrit56 @angela_rye I agree that it’s silly to count 15 yo teens in the figure, but the idea that marriage rates are *increasing* is not supported by any data I’ve seen. If you have something different, drop the link below.

“I think we all care about the preservation of the family” says the chronically single and childless woman that refuses to address the topic of family directly.
“Cite your source”- oh well I don’t even like that source.
“What even is family and marriage policy”- why can’t it be these totally unrelated, already-approved-by the liberal-establishment-topics that I want to use to deflect?
These people are full of it. Their agenda is clear.

@iamrhondamary Their responses were revealing—and predictable. I have a chapter in my book on the failures of the black leadership class that explains both why and how they avoid talking about the issue.

Your work w/Heritage conflates fatherlessness w/out-of-wedlock births which are 2 different things. Separate them and show while marriage needs improvement, black fathers are WILLING/ACTIVE participants in the lives of their children. But that gives black men too much dignity🤷🏿♂️

@DelanoSquires So even where black mothers attest to black fathers being present not only by self reporting but observation for 1 month, I guess that equates to dads only getting their children every other week. I just think you gotta update that argument. Look at the BGSU data and regroup.

And for the record, this is Dr. Carson’s podcast, not mine. I’ve long stated that many nonresidential dads are involved with their kids, so if I use “fatherless” it’s usually to describe dads who are completely absent or women who promote using sperm donors because they want kids but not a husbandLw

@angela_rye Those stats are based on the marital status of the mother at the time of the child birth. It doesn't take into account parental involvement, so his next statement about "coming home to a father everyday" doesn't necessarily track. Just saying

Here’s the CDC study every like to cite on father involvement. Unfortunately, too many think the main story is race when it’s really residency. Over 60% of dads who live with their child ages 5-18 (most of whom are married) eat with their kids every day. That number drops to 3% when they don’t. Martructural enabler of father presence and involvement, which is why marriage *before* carriage should be the gold standard for family formation.

The main takeaway from the report is residency, not race. 62% of black men who live with their kids eat with them every day, compared to 2% who don’t. These stats mirror the rates for other groups. So across the board, the pattern holds: men who live with their kids are more active across a rs why marriage *before* carriage is my gold standard.

Why are they attacking everything but your argument?
@TylynnJ45565 The bad faith argument doesn’t hold water. I’ve been writing about these issues before I was even married and was still working for local government and writing for BMWK.

There’s no upside to platforming and legitimizing any leadership of the Heritage Foundation to talk about blackness — as they simultaneously enact their plan, Project 2025 which undoes civil rights protections, voting access, DEI, & a focus on ending racial disparities.

@DelanoSquires @deray Advocating restoration of the "nuclear family" for future generations and supporting the village NOW don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Leaving fathers out of the text may have been a glaring mistake but misrepresenting their intentions isn't the best way to counter, IMO /4

@DelanoSquires @deray Perhaps beause when 70% of kids have already been born outside traditional marriages, you can’t just tell millions of grandmothers, aunts, and community members holding families together that their support doesn't count until a marriage certificate appears? /1

I didn’t say they don’t count, but when I read that title I’d assume it relates to the proverb “it takes a village to raise a child.” If so, they could have easily started by saying:
“We encourage robust extended care networks of extended family, fictive kin, and close friends to support mothers, fathers and their children…”
But that’s not what they did. They started by committing to disrupt the family. And when self-avowed Marxists who start speaking like that, it’s wise to link their vision to their ideology.
Then there’s the matter of meeting people where they are. I’ll use a different example to make my point.
Educators teach in low-income urban neighborhoods where most parents don’t have degrees yet still promote college as an *ideal* for kids. Same logic applies here. You can affirm something as an ideal without denigrating the people who don’t meet it.

@DelanoSquires @deray So Squires seeks to intentionally misrepresenting the end goal. The second half of the very sentence he shared clarifies their purpose: “...by supporting each other as extended families and ‘villages’ that collectively care for one another, and especially ‘our’ children...” /4

“They were arguing against the idea that the nuclear model is the ONLY legitimate or healthy way to raise a family.”
Why would any “pro-black” be making this argument when 70% of black children are born to unmarried parents and less than half live with two parents? Also, they talk about the “village” but only name mothers and children. Where are the men and fathers in their ideal village?

Black Lives Matter was platformed and legitimized even though its founders argued for “disrupting” the natural family. People who supported that are in no position to lecture anyone about anti-blackness.

The decline in the nuclear family is the biggest problem in the black community. You repair it and many other problems in the community to start to resolve themselves. They weren’t really listening to you brother but keep fighting the good fight.

@jay4davis The problem with framing this entirely around marriage rates is that it ignores actual behavior. The CDC’s data on fatherhood shows that Black fathers whether living in the home or not—are statistically more involved in the daily care of their kids than other groups.

And page 19 of that CDC study shows that 65% of dads who live with their kids (ages 5-18)—most of whom are married—talked to their kids every day, compared to 16% of dads who don’t. Conversely, 37% of non-resident dads don’t talk to their kids at all, compared to only 1% of co-residential fathers. So yr father involvement. The major difference in father involvement is not centered on race. It’s about residence.

It’s very telling how dismissive they are as he calmly answers and gives a very logical response to everything they say. They don’t want to hear what you have to say they want you to bow to them

The marriage rates for all groups have declined. Not sure what will happen if all the groups rates increase 😂. Marriage is wonderful I’m sure. But, don’t see what it solves or doesn’t solve. When marriage rates where higher the world was also a mess. The same mess as it is now actually 😂
When conservative and liberal pundits are asked to think of real solutions what do they do? They claim you are a troll 😂

Can you think of a single people group in the world that has thrived with these types of family dynamics (35% marriage rate, 70% nonmarital births, & less than 50% two-parent homes)? My argument is that strong families are the foundation of a strong community, culture and country, not that they are a magiieties ills.
