The first comprehensive dictionary of the Turkic languages was written nearly 1,000 years ago in Baghdad.

Mahmud al-Kashgari, a scholar from Kashgar (in today's East Turkestan), spent years traveling across the Turkic world collecting dialects and sayings, then compiled the he Compendium of the Languages of the Turks, between 1072 and 1074. About 7,500 words, samples of old Turkic poetry, and even the first known map of the lands where Turkic peoples lived.

By then the Seljuk Turks had become the real power behind the Abbasid Caliphate, so the book was meant to teach the Arabic-speaking world that Turkic was a language of equal standing to Arabic.
