Saida shed the reform since December 2023, called it the correction of a years-long historic mistake.

The first comprehensive dictionary of the Turkic languages was written nearly 1,000 years ago in Baghdad.

Mahmud al-Kashgari, a scholar from Kashgar (in today's East Turkestan), spent years traveling across the Turkic world collecting dialects and sayings, then compiled the he Compendium of the Languages of the Turks, between 1072 and 1074. About 7,500 words, samples of old Turkic poetry, and even the first known map of the lands where Turkic peoples lived.

By then the Seljuk Turks had become the real power behind the Abbasid Caliphate, so the book was meant to teach the Arabic-speaking world that Turkic was a language of equal standing to Arabic.

Azerbaijan restored its independence 35 years ago today.

On October 18, 1991, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, Azerbaijan's Supreme Council adopted the Constitutional Act on State Independence. The act declared the new republic the legal heir of the Azerbaijan Democratic irst democratic republic in the Muslim East, whose declaration is engraved in its original Arabic script on this monument in Baku.

On December 29, 1991, Azerbaijanis unanimously confirmed it in a nationwide referendum.

Why it matters today: that 1991 act is the legal foundation of modern Azerbaijan, the basis of everything from its oil contracts to the tricolor flag flying over Baku again. October 18 is celebrated as State Independence Day.
