In his January 28, 2011 article, Abdulrahman El-Sayed urged President Obama to support protesters against Mubarak. He wrote that he voted with both his Egyptian and American identities in mind and argued that promoting democracy in the Middle East served American interests and es invite scrutiny of his foreign-policy judgment: how does he balance enthusiasm for political change with the consequences for stability and American interests?

In my view, leadership that champions regime change without adequately weighing its consequences could be disastrous for America. Anyone seeking public office should explain their past positions and what they have learned from them.
