Feminism kills me because literally every time we discover a technology that enables women some freedom from the tyranny of nature, we also change society within a generation to make it happen.

Men have never oppressed women. We love you! We're on your team! We always were!

The 19th amendment was passed by an all-male electorate! As soon as society was ready for women to vote, we made it happen within a generation.

Still waiting for someone to prove me wrong and not just attempt to shame me

@vividvoid as well intentioned as this, consider the rest of the world. equal opportunities are not equally distributed. the movement of feminism and its actual tangible fruits in terms of change in status quo, societal level change etc are yet to be felt in a lot of countries

@ollyrobot Yeah but as soon as we invented the bicycle and mass produced labor saving devices they didn't have to stay home all the time. 1 generation later they made the case for the vote and got it. With a lot of male support

@vividvoid I wish that was the case but men are not on my team 😭 spend some time in my mentions and you’ll get a taste. And yes, I deal with these type of men in my real life!

@_nomadic_soul I have no doubt individual men are total shitheads to you and I genuinely wish it weren't the case. I mean that broadly, as a society, if we imagine men and women as separate political classes, the class of "men" has cooperated with "women" much more often than we've defected

@vividvoid Tech has been enormously liberating to women for sure but the claim that men have never oppressed women is historically indefensible. There isn't really a matter of competing interpretations of history. It's fine, we can move onwards and upwards but we don't need fiction.

@vividvoid It happened DESPITE men. No man created a technology with the express intent of "this will liberate women." It was always incidental.

@kiarakamn Quick, what was the sex of the electorate that passed the 19th amendment? I'll give you a hint: women weren't allowed to vote

@vividvoid i think people are rejecting the premise here that women's lack of freedom relative to men is fully attributable to "the tyranny of nature" as you put it

@amirism_ That's fair enough, I'm just saying that there's a direct path from technology freeing women up and men teaming up with them to encode those freedoms into law

The story of civilization for the last 2000 years has been men working increasingly hard to make life better for women (and ourselves)

@vividvoid Is men passing the 19th amendment (as you keep citing) not an example of feminism? Whats so bad about women advocating for themselves, if it’s something men already do?

Replying to @delillostan
@delillostan if it's a sleight of hand or if you don't mean it, but you did exactly what I'm pointing out in the second sentence. The suffragettes were not women advocating for themselves, they were a group of women who were supported by many men and opposed by many women. There has never been a political class of all men that was opposed to a political class of all women and that's the fundamental lie of feminism

@vividvoid @Thomasdelvasto_ i sense you are making an interesting point here but i feel confused about how to see men and women as political classes - like behaviors and intentions abstracted from the personal. how would i go about getting an intuition for what you are pointing to here?

@emily_for_now @Thomasdelvasto_ Something like, the way the law or culture treats the concept of "men" or the concept of "women" independent of individual variation
