@triggerpod @KonstantinKisin Here's a pithy explanation of how neoliberal economic policies helped drive Britain into a deep recession.
And why, as I explained Konstantin's claims were not true.

Neoliberal policies helped drive the UK into a deep recession in the early 1980s.
Industrial communities - and our social fabric - never recovered.
Let's go through them:
DEREGULATION
Abolishing exchange controls in 1979 and loosening controls on bank lending.
@KonstantinKisin argued that financial deregulation began with the Big Bang of 1986.
That is factually wrong.
As a 2002 Bank of England working paper put it:
"The most recent round of deregulation in financial services in the United Kingdom began in 1979 with the removal of exchange controls.”
That allowed British investors to shift far more capital into overseas assets - just when UK industry needed investment.
A 1981 Bank of England analysis found that outward portfolio investment had risen substantially after abolition, and concluded that domestic interest rates were probably left “somewhat higher”.
Higher interests meant a deeper recession.
SUBORDINATING THE REAL ECONOMY TO FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
See above, but also the dramatic hiking of interest rates.
High rates benefited creditors relative to borrowers while making borrowing and productive investment brutally expensive.
They also helped drive up sterling, making British exports more expensive and imports cheaper – hammering manufacturing
The interest-rate squeeze was a central driver of the deep recession.
SLASHING TAXES ON THE RICH
In her first Budget in 1979, Margaret Thatcher slashed the top rate of income tax from 83% to 60%.
This was substantially financed by hiking VAT from 8% to 15%.
The VAT hike added nearly 3.5 percentage points to the Retail Price Index.
It also squeezed purchasing power and consumer demand - deepening the recession.
And all this was happening as the government pursued an increasingly ferocious monetary squeeze to bring inflation down.
HOBBLING ORGANISED LABOUR
Thatcher introduced the first major anti-union legislation in 1980 - the Employment Act.
Combined with surging unemployment - which itself drastically weakened workers' bargaining power – this shifted power away from workers towards bosses.
That made it harder for unions to resist redundancies, closures and wage "restraint" / cuts.
PRIVATISATION
Thatcher's first major privatisation came with the sale of British Aerospace shares in 1981.
But crucially, Thatcher also imposed market discipline on state-owned industries and companies - constraining their access to state finance and demanding commercial returns.
In 1980 alone, British Steel eliminated around 6.5 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity and 50,000 jobs.
And this was explicitly connected to privatisation. In 1981, the government said changes to British Steel would help “pave the way for further privatisation.”
A "RAPID RECOVERY"
Konstantin also argues that there was a "rapid recovery" from the 1980-1981 recession.
But while economic growth resumed, unemployment kept rising until 1984 – long after the technical recession was over. It reached 11.9%
Manufacturing had suffered its biggest twelve month collapse in the post-war era.
I've been travelling around but I'll do a video on this shortly!

@triggerpod @KonstantinKisin @owenjonesjourno The same Owen who decries the hollowing out of working class communities celebrates them being undercut by mass migration. His greatest regret is that Billy Elliot wasn't Pakistani.

@triggerpod @KonstantinKisin @owenjonesjourno One of the greatest interview parts ever. Jones is insufferable to watch bouncing around and just saying words to sound intelligent. But scratch beneath the surface and you see him for what he really is an absolute and utter twat.

@triggerpod @KonstantinKisin @owenjonesjourno Opression is bad
Empires were a fact = Facts are opression
I dont like opression = I dont use facts
How to go from "I`m a nice person" to "mental illness" in three easy steps.

@triggerpod @KonstantinKisin @owenjonesjourno The same thing happened in New Zealand.
Recession first THEN market reforms.
But his nonsense argument about the “preparation of the reforms caused the recession” doesn’t work because the reforming government wasn’t even ELECTED until 1984 in New Zealand.

@triggerpodd@KonstantinKisind that “he hates the Jews because their faith and success undercut his Marxist ideology” so I’ll have to remove him from this comment for it to post.
I mention this because his approach to Thatcher and the economy of the 1980s is the same: He is a Marxist, and he builds narratives to support his Marxist ideology rather than letting facts, data and causal relationships reveal truth even when it means his preferred thesis may be debunked. This is the modus operandi of every Leftist ideologue.

@triggerpodd@KonstantinKisinn@owenjonesjournoin:
”Hard as it may be to believe, the growth of crude criminality in Britain in recent decades may well be one consequence of the drive for equality. In addition, that drive for equality has driven out of Britain some of its ablest, best-trained, most vigorous citizens, much to ed States and other countries that have given them a greater opportunity to use their talents for their own benefit.
Finally, who can doubt the effect that the drive for equality has had on efficiency and productivity? Surely, that is one of the main reasons why economic growth in Britain has fallen so far behind its continental neighbors, the United States, Japan, and other nations over the past few decades.”

@triggerpodd@KonstantinKisinerienced this period it is fascinating to be 'informed' that it was all entirely something else, by someone who was born in 1984.
The tactic is selectively or randomly choose statements and beliefs them conflate them and present it is a new reality. For righteous presentation purposes, flail arms, speak rapidly and constantly interrupt. This is to illustrate true belief.

@triggerpod @KonstantinKisin @owenjonesjourno The depth of Owen Jones' understanding of economics is wafer thin, and predicated on viewing economic history through a barking mad raving looney leftard socialist lens, while ignoring that Britain was proper fucked when Thatcher took over, rendering his arguments weak AF.

@triggerpode@KonstantinKisins@owenjonesjourno years and it still doesn’t get any less embarrassing. He sits there rattling off his little glossary of terms like “neoliberalism” and “financialisation” as if the sheer number of syllables is doing the intellectual heavy lifting, then expects everyone to nod along while he rewrites basic chronology to fit the story he’s already decided is true. The early-1980s recessions weren’t caused by the privatisation of BT or the Big Bang or the miners’ strike because those things happened years later. He knows this. When the dates get put in front of him he just starts shifting the goalposts into “well the process started earlier” and “subsidy cuts count as privatisation” and “monetarism is actually the same thing as everything else I listed.” That’s not an argument, it’s a fucking coping mechanism.
The actual driver was the decision to stop the inflation that had already been running wild through the seventies. Rates went to seventeen percent in Britain and near twenty in America because prices were rising at a rate that was destroying living standards. That choice produced a short, sharp recession. Inflation then came down. Growth resumed. None of that requires pretending the later structural reforms retroactively caused the downturn that was already under way. He keeps bundling the anti-inflation medicine together with the later sell-offs and tax changes so he can wave the whole package at people and declare it the original sin. It’s tidy for the book, it’s just not how the sequence worked, and it’s pure pseudo-intellectual nonsense dressed up as diagnosis. It’s embarrassing. 🙈

@triggerpod @KonstantinKisin @owenjonesjourno Owen Jones bemoans high rents, acknowledges a people’s generational ties to an area, and, when those people are dispersed, laments the heart of those areas being torn out, yet he supports open-border mass immigration which causes all these issues as well as… well… you know…
