Of course, the phrase "the Universe is indifferent" is not a scientific statement but a poetic one. We use it as an emotional characterization of the nature of reality. The Universe is simply the arena in which purposeless physical matter undergoes transformation, while the emergence of humanity is our great fortune. But to make use of the possibilities the Universe offers, we must be grateful to it, and that requires us first to overcome our own indifference.
