Watching the @nodejs doc made me want to publicly be on twitter again. A decade ago I deleted my twitter account (@ryah) - back then node's growing popularity caused a lot of noise that I didn't want in my ear. But that was long ago - seems fun to have a public profile now!

celld's otel with parquet files is so nice. literally an entire observability stack enabled with one flag. across multiple services with-in your worker app, queryable with duckdb.
when you have the right abstractions (workers programming model) things just click

I, along with the rest of the Deno company, am joining Cloudflare!
I'm motivated by abstractions that give leverage at scale. The Cloudflare workers programming model is a hermetic computing abstraction that truly embodies the old Sun Microsystems tagline "The Network Is the Computer". The programming abstractions that Kenton designed really force scalability. If you squint your eyes you might even conceive of it as a distributed high-level operating system.
The only major problem with this distributed operating system is that practically people only use it inside of Cloudflare. Cloudflare is an amazing service for nearly all applications - but there are many situations when you might need it to run elsewhere.
I want to solve this problem and make the Workers programming model the default way you write server-side application code.
The time is ripe for new abstractions too - what software we run and how we run it are changing quickly with AI. The number of agents is exploding and I don't think they all need a Linux VM. A much more lightweight Durable Object would suffice for many applications. I'm super keen to talk to people who want to self-host agents at scale on DOs - msg me!

This isn't your typical acquisition blog post. I'm really excited not just that @rough__sea, @piscisaureus, and friends are joining, but also what they plan to work on: Making workerd a first-class, self-hostable open source runtime. Read for more:

The team behind @deno_land, including @rough__sea (he knows a bit about Node.js), is joining @Cloudflare.
They’ll help make Workers better for Node.js developers and advance workerd as a core primitive for what comes next. cfl.re/4zlzlSa

How much time/effort/money would be saved if Github just had a default click-through CLA when opening a PR?

reflecting on 1920s images of people working on massive generators for the electrification of the modern world makes me realize that the past was wildly futuristic too

rust never was the defacto language for agents and will not be. i love rust - it’s my primary language - but i work on runtimes and platforms
application code belongs in the default language - JavaScript (or its extension TS)

Rust no longer the defacto best language for agents
Compile times are too long, I'm always finding myself bottlenecked by time not intelligence
And the agents have gotten really at doing manual memory management now
