I can’t begin to tell you how much I do *not* want this absolute cringefest of a hoodie of the triangle man that’s merch of a podcast co-sponsored by his company

small detail in the @sketch beta:

disappearing toasts show a progress ring around the X button, so you know you don’t have to do it yourself

oh, and this menu to send frames to other pages (or sections!) is also new

Have you seen the new feature? It’s Payload on Make. It’s literally Specs in Design and FigJam. You can probably find it on Code layers. Dude it’s Guidelines. You can get it in Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans. It’s on the Chrome extension.

i have a post-ipo opportunity theory.

the moment a company becomes public, it means you can start building its competitor almost right away.

not because the company becomes bad, but because the nature of incentives changes.

before that, punishment mostly comes from users. after that, punishment can increasingly come from shareholders, which means the company becomes more locked into a direction and naturally more risk averse.

they also become less agile. radical thinking gets harder, pivots get harder, changing and adjusting constantly gets harder, while this is basically a huge part of what building a company is in the first place.

and then there is the legal and organisational nature of being public. you are simply no longer free to speak, react and move in the same way a startup can. there are more layers, more people involved, more things that need to be explained and made predictable.

the reason i'm quoting the figma's launch is because, to me, this video represents exactly that.

look at almost any large public company and eventually they start producing ads at a similar level of abstraction: emotional, character driven, less about a very specific user problem and more about the category, the brand and market dominance.

i'm not saying it's a bad ad. i'm saying a startup usually can't afford to make this kind of ad. it would be a waste of money, and more importantly, it's not really its language yet.

every stage of a company has its own marketing tools that are aligned with its scale.

what works for apple would never work for someone building a DIY mp3 player in a garage, and what works for that person would probably look ridiculous coming from apple.

and i think the same is true beyond marketing.

as companies grow, they gain scale, trust, distribution and power, but they also leave certain ways of thinking and behaving behind.

because every time a company becomes too large to move in a certain way, someone smaller gets a free spot to move exactly like that.

I’m visiting Japan 🇯🇵 for the first time this fall, and would love recommendations!

I want to spent a good chunk of time on out-there / less traveled places, and then a few days in Tokyo at the tail end.

What shouldn’t I miss?

love @YAMATOMICHI’s product pages: no-nonsense, full walkthrough of features, design and material choices, how it compares, and what makes it special.

so many companies make it so hard to understand that

e.g. yamatomichi.com/en/products/5-…

@YAMATOMICHI more often still, brands make it hard to grasp product *range*: what’s the difference between these options? what are the tradeoffs? what’s best for which purpose?

all it takes is a product guide, doesn’t need to be fancy, e.g. yamatomichi.com/en/journals/29…

@YAMATOMICHI if you make it easy for ppl to understand what’s best for them, chances are they’ll be happier with their choice

likewise, if they understand thought and care that went into what they’re buying, they’ll likely appreciate it more

but maybe this is an idealistic/naive view, idk

i’m actually very surprised @figma hasn’t announced their own model yet

b/c it’s been over 2 years since they’ve opted all users below enterprise into training models on their data by default

they’d own a core technology and Wall Street would love it as they’d no longer be only skimming off the top of big labs
reselling tokens is one hell of a drug

It’s new beta day! This one is good:
- Variants (finally!)
- Sections
- Symbols are called components now
- Plus plenty more improvements and fixes

But seriously go test variants because it’s what you’ve all been asking us for ↓

A reminder, for no reason at all, that:
• Sketch has a local MCP that works with any local agent
• We’re not in the business of selling you AI credits

sketch.com/ai

Also, a sneak peek: talk to your agents directly within Sketch (coming later this year).
