Best anecdote in Carol Thatcher's book about her father is when Sir Denis boarded a train at Paddington in which the only empty compartment was reserved for Rosewood Psychiatric Hospital.

Denis travelled alone and in comfort as far as Reading when "all these chaps piled in", accompanied by a male nurse, who counted them before the train moved off.

'One, two, three, four ... who are you?"

"I'm the Prime Minister's husband."

"Six, seven, eight, nine..."

Y’all. We are literally witnessing a coup attempt going on live in Brazil. Bolsonaro is losing the election badly, so his people in state and local leadership are grounding flights, canceling public transportation going to Lula strongholds. Massive voter suppression. Supreme Court had to intervene to mandate 2hrs extra at the polls. Mixed reports on how many polling stations are respecting the ruling. Whew!

One reason the models can't track observed warming? The loss of shipping pollution hasn't been incorporated. You couldn't make it up.
New peer-reviewed paper confirms 0.4C/decade acceleration with reduced air pollution as a cause.

Contrary to popular belief, models aren't keeping up with observed warming.

"Further analysis shows that the ensemble mean of the 26 CMIP6 models reproduces the observed warming easonably well (0.21 versus 0.18 °C per decade for models and observations, respectively), but fails to capture the recent doubling of the warming rate during 2011–2025, with a simulated rate of 0.29°C per decade compared with 0.40°C per decade in observations."

"The inability of most selected models to reproduce the observed doubling of the warming rate may be partially attributable to inaccuracies in aerosol emission inventories over East China used in CMIP6 and to the omission in CMIP6 of radiative effects and feedbacks associated with the International Maritime Organization’s 2020 regulation limiting the maximum sulfur content of shipping fuels. In East Asia–the North Pacific region, the accelerated warming has been linked to reductions in anthropogenic aerosol emissions from East Asia and from international shipping, as well as to cloud feedbacks in response to a warming North Pacific, and to a poleward shift of the North Pacific stormtrack."

"aerosol emissions are expected to continue declining in East Asia, and are likely to decrease in South Asia in the coming years, driven in part by India’s National Clean Air Programme, which was launched in 2019 to substantially reduce air pollution over the next decade. Since aerosols exert a cooling effect on climate, their reduction in India could contribute to regional warming over South Asia and the northern Indian Ocean. Together, these factors may help sustain or even amplify the elevated global warming rate observed during 2011–2025."

"Anthropogenic aerosols exert a substantial cooling influence on GMST. Since around 2010, aerosol emissions have declined markedly over East Asia as a result of stringent air-pollution controls and over global oceans following the implementation of low-sulfur shipping regulations. These reductions have been linked to enhanced warming in the North Pacific and North Atlantic during the past decade"

There’s just one *small* problem with Andy Burnham’s suggestion we all get wind-up radios to keep in touch during a major outage.
Erm, local radio in the UK has been diminished and there’s hardly any left -so who’s giving out the local info we’re supposed to listen to? 😄

We've known that Nitric Oxide sprays significantly reduce viral load in the upper respiratory tract since 2021.

"A rapid reduction (95%) in the SARS-CoV-2 viral load was observed within 24 hours, with a 99% reduction observed within 72 hours with NONS treatments."

Your upper racts use different parts of your immune system.

Getting a full series of Nuvaxovid gives you awesome protection for your lower respiratory tract...

But the upper respiratory system needs a little boost.

If it boosts virion clearance during infection, then we can say it will clear the virus before you're infected, too.

This is a critical tool for everyone trying to avoid ANY pathogen, not just COVID.

Anyone denying the mechanisms that are proven to be correct is a science denier and wants you infected no matter how much they talk about masks or show you charts with uncited data pools.

Saying there is no clinical evidence of their effects is an actual lie.

I'm a double amputee.

I recieve 3,600 a year in PIP

@Helen_Whately receives *39,000* a year in housing.

If our Hels wants to cut down the welfare bill I've an idea where she should start...
Look at this chart 👇

Many if not most of the children on DLA will go onto PIP.

Around half of children who get DLA become NEETs.

There’s a clear path from child DLA to PIP to a lifetime on benefits.

We must change this.

You'd be surprised how often this happens. Several times Ive been met with abuse for trying to warn people - especially with children - that what they're doing is dangerous.

Tip tip on holiday in Kernow:

1) the waves are much bigger and stronger than they look

2) learn to low the fishermen - if fishermen appear on cliffs, gather your stuff and run like hell. The tide comes in very quickly here, and very powerfully. Fishermen know the water and only turn up when the tide is due in.

If the tide is already in, and there's nobody fishing - do NOT go in.

If the tide is out, and nobody is around - do NOT go in.

4) If there are no surfers/body boarders in the water - do NOT go in. Surfers, like fishermen, know the local waters better than you.

5) if a local tells you what you're doing is dangerous - listen to them: they know the water better than you.

6) if there are no lifeguards and you have your children with you - do NOT go in.

PSA: This week was kind of a turning point for AI and cybersecurity. Please take this weekend to do some simple cleanup for your family. Some suggestions:

- Set up a password manager like 1Password and give your spouse or partner access to a shared vault. Teach them how to use it.

- Update your passwords for critical stuff - your email account, your bank or financial stuff, etc. Store in your password manager and use the strongest password you can.

- Use two factor auth for everything you can. SMS is not ideal although better than nothing. Google Authenticator or a passkey is better. Hardware key is safest.)

- Add a sim pin to your phone. Makes it harder to sim jack.

- Update your phone and your computer to the newest releases. Turn auto-updates on.

- Freeze your credit - takes 5 minutes.

- Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN.

- If you’re using claude code or have AI agents that browse the web, they’re probably using Node.js. It’s also vulnerable. Update claude code, update node on your machine.

- If you’re building stuff on your computer, ask claude or grokbot (which is connected to twitter and likely has the most current info) to audit any of your repos for vulnerabilities. Ask grok to make it a scheduled task so it can do this daily - things are moving very quickly in the space right now.

- Consider some light resiliency stuff. This probably sounds silly, but it sounded silly at the beginning of covid too. Having printed out copies of important stuff - especially financial accounts. Having some cash on hand. Having some shelf-stable food and clean water or a water filter. Having a map. Having a generator that can at least power your fridge or some devices. Cheap insurance.

Again, I don’t want to alarm people, but I was taught that you should have a Secure plan, a Comfortable plan, and a Wealthy plan. And it seems pretty clear the secure plan needs to now factor cybersecurity risk as a legit threat. Take a weekend and shore yourself up.

Infrastructure failure IS coming this winter and the government is panicking big time

There’s a number of recent events which are telling signs

These“suggestions” from ministers to stockpile essentials are not hollow words. They’re trying to get people prepared with causing major panic

The decision to grant a licence for the Jackdaw gas field and go against Labour’s net zero policy is extremely telling. This decision isn’t about this winter, as the gas won’t be flowing by then, this is to try and convince the electorate that the government has learnt its lesson and next winter it’ll be different

Also, they’re already started to look to blame others. The government has known for months that our gas supplies won’t last long enough should we have a severe winter, but they’ve buried their heads in the sand. When the power cuts come it’ll be the fault of Russia or Iran or some other perceived enemy, not the fault of horrendous policy decisions by consecutive Conservative and Labour governments

It’s time to buckle up and hold on, because the UK is in for one hell of a ride this winter

I’m working on an article to explain why I believe the UK and Irish governments are telling households to stockpile water and food that doesn’t require electricity.

TL;DR: I believe governments are preparing to prioritise AI data centres over their own citizens.

The electricity consumption figures and government policies point to a serious problem. Both countries are preparing households for prolonged power outages while giving energy hungry AI data centres preferential treatment.

Are these warnings really about extreme weather, or do governments already know their electricity grids won’t be able to cope with the expansion of AI data centres?
“Be ready by having some everyday essentials… three litres of water per person per day, tinned goods... to last a few days”

Speaking to @vicderbyshire, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting details advice to households to be prepared for a “dangerous and turbulent world”.

🚨 PLEASE SHARE!

I've written to both my children's schools following the Government's antisemitism review.

I WILL NOT accept genocide being presented as a two-sided political debate, or Palestinian history and suffering being erased from their education.

I've drafted a template which I'm sharing for other parents to use or adapt.

Political impartiality must NEVER become historical dishonesty.

Please use them. Challenge your schools. Demand answers.
