Britain’s missing sovereign wealth fund… Treasury officials have modelled that had the UK done what Norway did with North Sea revenues, there would be a £1 trillion fund…

As Chancellor sets up Energy Wealth Fund, a look at the long historical argument about where the oil windfall went, including from interviews with those who have run Norways $2.4 trillion fund, now the biggest in the world, filled from the proceeds of the same North Sea.

Steve Witkoff to Putin:

You talk so much about my president, President Trump, being a humanitarian.

You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that, I commend you, and I thank you again.
It suits the Kremlin to have Washington believe that a deal with Putin is just around the corner. One more meeting, one more concession, one more phone call. And while the Americans wait for a peace deal, Russia keeps waging war.

Russia gets concessions. Ukraine gets pressure.
ded that Ukraine stop striking Russian oil refineries. This works well for the Kremlin: Washington is already making concessions to Russia while demanding concrete concessions from Ukraine. As long as Moscow keeps hopes of a deal alive, the US may hold off on new sanctions and persuade Kyiv to accept additional terms for the sake of successful negotiations.

Talks can go on forever. Even while the war continues.

Discussing a new document or a possible summit allows American mediators to report progress toward peace. Russia retains direct access to Washington and the opportunity to sell its version of why the war began and what it would take to end it.

No luck with peace? Let’s talk business.

Dmitriev has reported discussions about joint projects, including nuclear-powered data centers. Walking away from the talks would then mean giving up the benefits the US administration hopes to gain.

Open-ended demands allow Moscow to keep bargaining.

Without a definitive list of Russian conditions, every round can end with statements about progress and the need for further consultations. Meanwhile, Moscow can keep adding demands.
Take Putin’s October 16 statement about a “security zone” in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, which he does not intend to discuss in peace negotiations. Russia maintains an additional territorial demand while simultaneously signaling its willingness to meet with the US.

In St. Petersburg, watch what Russia actually agrees to do.

Which strikes will it stop? When? Who will verify this? What security guarantees for Ukraine will it accept?

Without this, another “very constructive conversation” will simply mean the Americans have had their hopes raised again. They will leave to prepare for the next meeting, and Russia will keep waging war.

Thank you for your incredible feedback to our #Newsnight Aberfan special last night. We really really do appreciate it.

The former Bishop of Liverpool actually took to the trouble today to ring the NN desk (he chaired the Hillsboro Independent Panel which helped uncover the truth for victims’ families)

He wanted to express his appreciation for last night's ‘outstanding’ programme and the ‘time & context given to the story’

If you missed it, plse do watch the testimony from survivors Jeff Edwards, Gaynor Madgwick & Gerald Kirwan who were 8 years old, and sitting in class, when that coal tip engulfed their school

Replying to @BBCNewsnight
@BBCNewsnight @vicderbyshire Well done Newsnight for such a dignified and moving program. The people you interviewed represented the resilience and spirit of the mining communities of the Valleys. I was 10 years old at the time, living in a mining village a few miles from Aberfan.

A poignant #Newsnight on Aberfan which underlines the contempt working class people are treated with by authority in the UK to this day. Emotionally sensitive & literate reporting by @vicderbyshire who is a skilled, appropriate & nuanced interviewer.

Tonight: #Newsnight special - Aberfan, 60 years on

1030pm @BBCTwo @BBCNews

We speak to survivors Jeff Edwards, Gaynor Madgwick and Gerald Kirwan - they were 8 years of age & sitting in class when on Oct 21, 1966 a coal waste tip that loomed a quarter of a mile above their villjunior school killing in total 144 people - 116 of them children

What happened in that village decades ago speaks to the scandals & institutional dishonesty and cover ups since - from Hillsborough to Grenfell to the post office to the fight for justice nuclear test veterans are going through now

The National Coal Board was to blame for the Aberfan disaster. It tried - & failed - to spin its way out of it

Yet no one lost their job, or was ever demoted, let alone fined or charged with a crime

That’s why Jeff, Gaynor and Gerald want you to hear their testimony - because justice hasn’t been done

Thank you to Dominic Hughes and the BBC Health team for highlighting the plight of vaccine-injured and bereaved families. 💔

Please stay with this story. Recognition is a step forward, but we still need real reform, clear timelines and action.
