Textbook authors are telling the court they're getting the short end of the $1.5 billion @AnthropicAI settlement, reports Publishing Perspectives (@pubperspectives).
The settlement resolved a class action by authors over books Anthropic used to train its AI. The money is being paid out now, about $3,000 per book, split between each book's author and its publisher.

Most authors get a default 50-50 split with their publisher. Textbook authors don't, and some of their publishers are claiming 85 to 95 percent of the payment. Authors told to work it out with their publisher don't have the resources to hire a lawyer - let alone top do it with a claim this small. The Textbook and Academic Authors Association (@textandacademic), which has about 4,000 members, has written to the court asking for a fairer process.

For legal professionals, it may run the other way. Apart from treatises and the like, most will want their published insight in AI assistants like Anthropic's Claude, so as to build authority.

Google's stock fell nearly 13 percent, about $500 billion in value, on Thursday, reports Dan Kennedy, longtime media critic and journalism professor at Northeastern, at Media Nation. The cause is AI assistants, Google's own AI summaries among them, keeping people from clicking through to sources, and those AI answers are harder for Google to make money on.

Publishers felt it first. Kennedy cites Chartbeat figures showing search referrals down 60 percent for small publishers, 47 percent for mid-sized and 22 percent for large, with local news hit hardest.

Google can't pull back by turning off its AI summaries and going back to plain links. Users would simply move to another AI.

Kennedy adds that his own main search engine these days is Claude, and he always asks it for links to credible sources.

For the law, people may not search for a lawyer or a legal answer at all. They'll be in conversations with AI assistants where legal questions come up along the way, and lawyers publishing their own insight as authoritative sources may be the ones cited and read.

Seven law students at @UALR's Bowen School of Law studied Arkansas's county law libraries this summer, working with the Association of Arkansas Counties (@75arcounties).

They found wide differences in how county law library funds are distributed and spent, with several counties sitting on large balances. They briefed state legislators, and House Judiciary chair Rep. Carol Dalby said legislation could follow.

County law libraries are often where the public goes first for legal help. However they're funded and reformed, more and more people may be turning to AI assistants for legal information too, Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini among them.

Tina Sorenson at @LawLytics has a good piece, republished this week by the State Bar of Arizona (@AZStateBar), on what an AI assistant may look for when recommending a lawyer.

Her point is a fair one. With AI, people can now see what a lawyer has written and who the lawyer is. That matters. But writing alone won't get a lawyer hired.

She says business listings, reviews, credentials and a firm people can find all still count.

Perhaps there's an additional side to it as well. For lawyers writing for authority, it may prove valuable to have their published works preserved and structured for citation, each tied to its author. Then their insight stands as a signal of authority for the AI assistants people use, credited to them, today and going forward.

The CEO of @everlaw, AJ Shankar, says customers are more excited about its MCP connectors into Claude and ChatGPT than its new agentic AI.

Everlaw says connector use went from a few thousand in June to about 280,000 in October, and weekly calls from Claude grew from about 2,000 to 45,000. And the connectors are, in Shankar's words, "free for the users and free for the integrators."

It's appearing more and more that lawyers want legal content to come to them, in the AI they already use, rather than going somewhere else to find it.

It’s almost incomprehensible how wide the distance is between someone who’s working at the frontier with AI and basically everyone else right now.

The crazy thing is these lines are not converging, but only growing farther apart. If the curve of AI progress had leveled off, it would certainly have given most people and companies time to catch up or implement their workflows in a standardized way. The technology would have neutralized competitive advantage because everyone would be using it the same way.

But what’s happened is the opposite. The curve of AI progress is basically going vertical right now, which means if you had codified your processes 3-6 months ago you’re likely already behind again. Now imagine most companies that kicked into gear a year ago and thought that they were done. Even further behind now.

I’ve never seen a technology in my life and career that improves at this rate, which consequently means you need to upgrade your expectations at a similar rate. Our brains weren’t wired for this, and our organizational change management processes certainly weren’t either.

With any form of recursive self improvement, things just get wilder. It’s a time when you will need to be constantly reevaluating the things that didn’t work just a couple months ago to see if they now can be solved. AI native companies certainly have a strong advantage due to this right now, so now it comes down to can the bigger companies keep up. Wild times.
