Five companies are set to spend between $660 and $690 billion on AI compute this year. OpenAI alone expects around $50 billion.
The technology that's about to sit inside our jobs, our healthcare, our kids' schooling, our government is being shaped right now by a handful of how it works, how it's used, and who it answers to are all being decided – just not by us.
You're not imagining it: we're watching one of the most consequential public questions of our lifetimes be settled behind closed doors.

On June 12, a US Commerce export control directive forced Claude Fable 5 offline for every user worldwide – three days after launch, no restoration date.
Anthropic opposed the order.
The model went dark anyway.
Every user depended on one company inside one government’s what concentration costs: access lasts exactly as long as someone else allows.
The fix is infrastructure no single company or government can unilaterally switch off. 💚

Something feels off online.
One post gets thousands of views, but the replies feel hollow. Another post makes the same point and gets no visibility at all.
Sometimes it's hard to tell if this thing is even on.
And this week, the numbers caught up to the feeling: Cloudflare’s assed humans in web traffic for the first time.
Being human is no longer the default in a place that meaningfully shapes our lives.
The most valuable thing now might be rebuilding our places, so presence feels trustworthy and we can know what's real again.

Four companies – Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta – are projected to spend ~$700B on AI infrastructure this year, close to double what they spent in 2025.
Whoever owns the infrastructure sets the rules everyone else has to build around – and when the frontier AI compute layer e sheets, the rest of us are building on borrowed ground.
Power concentration this fast is hard to see when it's happening.
Trying to name it anyway is the first step toward building a different path.

You’ve spent 15 years contributing open source code.
Now, to stay employable, you rent your capability back from companies that trained their models on your work.
Just so you can keep pace.
This week, Anthropic shipped Opus 4.8 alongside workflows that can run hundreds of ey can write, refactor, and debug across entire codebases – because they were trained on ours.
The commons became the input.
The API became the gate.
And the people who laid the foundation are now being forced to subscribe.

We ask Claude to draft apologies before we've internalized what we've done wrong.
We ask ChatGPT to edit our emotions into a response that protects us from being known.
Someone asks us a question, and our first instinct is to ask Gemini to answer for us.
We used to hold human or hours, days, years – but now we offload them in minutes to intelligence that doesn't feel.
It's not that AI is inherently bad, it's that the dependency curve is subtle – and what we're starting to outsource to machines is the intricate work of knowing who we are.
We need to build a different path.

Our phones know where we sleep, what we search for at 2am, and who we stop talking to.
We're forced to subscribe to our toothbrushes. Our lawnmowers. Our refrigerators. Our cars.
Our feeds know our anxieties, our preferences, and our deepest convictions.
And all of this data – our lived experiences – somehow doesn’t even belong to us.
Worse: it isn’t being used to make our lives better. It’s being used to make someone else richer at our expense.
We need tech that protects us as aggressively as today’s platforms extract from us.
And those builders need funding. 💚

AI isn't replacing jobs one at a time, it’s collapsing the apprenticeship layer.

Maybe AI isn't breaking the value function, but exposing how broken it already was.
> Your job's replaced by a $20/mo agent.

None of that's a failure of AI, it's a system working as designed: maximizedcost.
Except the cost being minimized is us.
Displacement matters.
Regulation matters.
UBI matters.
But they're all downstream of a deeper question: is the system we trust to defend human prosperity still defending humans at all?

In 2024, Romania annulled its presidential election. An obscure candidate had surged from 1% in polls to win the first round, boosted by AI-generated deepfakes on social. The court voided the result.
That same year, a finance worker at Arup wired $25 million to scammers after a FO. He'd verified on a video call with his executive team before sending. Every person on that call was AI-generated.
In early 2026, the bet that AI agents will make human software workers redundant wiped $2 trillion from SaaS market cap. Not a cyberattack or a recession. An economy repricing human work as nonessential.
Our current systems weren't designed to protect us from the acceleration we're experiencing.

The world's racing toward artificial and autonomous intelligence, and systemic risk's accelerating right beside it.
But AI isn't inherently adversarial – it's a force multiplier. It just increases whatever we point it at.
And when it’s pointed at areas we're still sorting out – ce scarcity, democratic fragility – risk can compound in the wrong direction.
We're at an inflection point, and the question is as simple as it is critical:
Can we steer an agentic future toward coordinated benefit before the threat surface multiplies beyond us?
d/acc is how we get to yes.

d/acc is a framework for defensive acceleration.
The idea is simple: build tech that favors defense over offense, distributes power rather than concentrates it.
But the threat it responds to is not.
Progress is outpacing the institutions designed to protect us from its t a point where:

It believes that if the tools that threaten us are accelerating, the tools that protect us have to accelerate faster.

Resilient systems aren't built to avoid stress,
they're built to get stronger because of it.
Bitcoin survived Mt. Gox, regulatory bans across major economies, and state-level mining shutdowns.
Each one hardened the network.
Ethereum survived The DAO hack, the Merge, and every bate about what it should become.
Each one clarified the protocol.
Nassim Taleb calls this antifragility:
systems that need disorder to grow.
And as systemic stress continues to pressure test society, our design choices now determine how resilient our future becomes.

Most funding is zero-sum by design:
One committee decides.
One applicant wins.

Communities direct capital.
Demonstrated impact gets rewarded.
Contributors are sustained continuously.
The right only make this real – they rebalance capitalism toward durable impact.

🌱 BioFi Pathfinders Round, Gitcoin Grants 22: we funded 14 bioregional teams around the world through quadratic funding:
→ $55K matching pool
→ 1,096 contributions
→ $8,813 in direct donations
But there was an issue: most participants had never used a crypto wallet before.
e Global South, struggled with unreliable internet access and electricity.
Few had the social media presence to mobilize donors at the breadth that quadratic funding rewards.
Even fewer had a network that could readily donate in crypto.
We integrated PayPal to make it work. 🤝
And we learned: onchain funding assumes participants can transact onchain, but bioregional teams coordinate through place-based trust for a reason.
So, what does onchain funding infrastructure look like for communities who aren’t on crypto twitter?

2,400 years ago, the Mohists built defensive siege engineering manuals and distributed them to every city in China.
The theory: if defensive knowledge is free and widely available, aggression becomes uneconomical.
Today the @ethereumfndn published the EF Mandate – a that names the Mohists as an intellectual ancestor of Ethereum's purpose: defensive infrastructure that’s open source and available to everyone.
The Mandate enshrines CROPS (censorship resistant, open source, private, secure) as non-negotiable properties and reminds us that – while the Ethereum Foundation helps steward a defensive protocol – it's the ecosystem’s responsibility to build defensively on top of it.
To do that well, we need to know how to fund the ecosystem sustainably.
And the Mohists showed us that this path is best navigated when knowledge is legible, composable, and freely shared 💚👇

🎯 Profit requires participation, which requires coordination. Onchain funding can fill that gap now – and continue to compound as legacy systems erode.

We hosted a competition last for AI developers to predict how $1.5 million would be allocated in GG23.
Once the round ended, the AI with closest answers won the challenge.

⚡️ New governance proposal:
Sunset Gitcoin Grants and relaunch as a single, yearlong initiative to fund the d/acc landscape.
This new program would look like:
- Monthly campaigns, each focused on a single d/acc subdomain
- Accelerator-style design with milestone-based g pool supported by yield and coalitional funding
🛡️ Why d/acc?
Funding what matters means aligning capital with areas that are good for humanity and sustainable for the ecosystems that support them.
d/acc is one domain where that convergence is especially visible today.

Coalitional funding: a 2026+ primitive 🤝
The difference between fragmented funding and funding that compounds? Sometimes it's not the mechanism – it's the coalition.
SEMATECH, the Global Fund, and @linuxfoundation proved it. @ethereum brought it onchain.
Examples:
- he free-rider issue for Ethereum core contributors, no single sponsor needed
- @ethereumfndn, @uniswap, @yearnfi, and others pooled tens of millions via quadratic funding rounds to support public goods
As capital allocation becomes more plural and programmable, coalitional funding is how the onchain ecosystem coordinates at scale 💚
@owocki and @griffgreen go deeper 👇

v1 is closed. @OctantApp v2 begins 🐉
Yield-based funding is shifting how we fund public goods: people allocate yield more willingly than principal – yield feels like excess.
No treasury drawdowns.
No heroic one-offs.
Just durable, continuous flows.
This is maturation. 💚

The weekend closed with @griffgreen and @owocki exploring heart-centered coordination, framing code as a primitive for infrastructure of belonging.
From pluralism to localism, the message was clear: Ethereum is built to enable connection as much as innovation.

At PGF Power Hour, @sejal_rekhan and @owocki dove into the mechanics behind public goods funding.
The focus: how protocol-level tools sustain open ecosystems and civic experimentation.
