The initial case of market manipulation was bad. However, rather than fixing the flaws that allowed market manipulation to proliferate, regulators simply shut down the one market where the flaw had been exploited. It is as though there was a deadly highway crash, and rather than investigating vehicle safety and speed limits, regulators shut down that particular highway. Since 1958, we have the CFTC and other financial regulations that have metaphorically "solved" the "vehicle safety" challenges. American farmers had a real problem, but the baby was thrown out with the bath water!

The @UChicago student protests on onion futures is attracting DC attention. Pretty cool.
The fight for onion futures continues today in Chicago.
For those wondering how we got here, Congress banned onion futures in 1958 following market manipulation. Decades later, Hollywood successfully pushed to add a prohibition on box office event contracts.
Apparently, this debate still has a few layers left to peel back. Watch:
