I've been doing this work for over a decade...
I've sat with Entrepreneurs, Athletes, Execs, in some of the top ventures in the world.
They carry mindsets and ways of going about work/life that few have access to.
So I'm dropping a Newsletter. 1/ drgurner.substack.com

"The cowards never started and the weak died along the way. That leaves us, ladies and gentlemen." - Phil Knight, Shoe Dog
Ask yourself which of these groups you're in:
- The cowardly
- The weak, or
- Those who take on the challenge.
You can change groups at any time.

Easy cheat code to stand out:
Give 100% of your attention to whoever you're speaking with.
- Pay close attention
- Phone/laptop down
Every day, you're showing the world how you think about other people...and yourself.
Think about the message you're sending.

A reminder about the importance of Audacity in this week's free Friday newsletter:
You don't get outlier results, if you don't do outlier things.
Take the shot.

The only people who care about "status" are the people who don't have it.
Chasing it tells you everything you need to know about people (and stay away from those people).
Chasing it tells you everything you need to know about people (and stay away from those people).
people need to status max so much more
high status people saying "chasing status is bad" is such an effective way of keeping everyone below them
literally the only reason why you care about a person you have not met is because they've done something publicly approved

Be Aggressive about your life.
It is the only way to get what you want from it...
Nothing comes from the gentle hoping, half-given effort, or the daydreaming of most.
You have to know who you are...
What you want, pursue & reject

Very successful people are really good at something we never talk about: Ignoring things that don't matter.
There are always a thousand things you can focus on...
They know what to ignore or delegate, what to pay attention to, and what to push personally.

Regular "big swings" in your work are strategic, not reckless.
You never know when they'll land...and it's important to integrate.
You should have:
--> Things you are pushing forward every day..and..
--> That one big swing you're working on/taking too...

People are wrong about "hustle culture."
You need to hustle at the beginning of building almost anything that isn’t mediocre….
You just don’t need to “live there” for life.

People are very aware of the power of *one wrong decision* to influence your life...
The wrong spouse, decision to drive drunk, or even the wrong choice of career…but remember:
*One Right Decision,* can change the course of your life too....look for them.

"Survival is a skill, and a good one. But the skills of survival are different from the skills required to win, and when ambitious people mix them up it dramatically limits how far they can climb." ~ Gurner

There's a massive difference between survival mindset vs a winning one, and it will impact your company & career.
Survival is essential, but you have to be able to shift gears.

I am old enough to remember when we barely talked about politics at all...they existed in the background, and people lived their lives.
No social media, no one amping them up, news came on only a few times a day if you chose to watch it.
Ah, the Good Old Days.

Having real ambition is one of the most separating things you can voluntarily experience.
You will be increasingly different from everyone you know...
You will have to create intentional bridges to relate.

Today's weekly email from @drgurner about Slootman's 2018 article was such good timing
The fastest way to win in business, in this case, the mortgage & real estate business right now doesn't include lower rates or external ideas
It's committing to higher velocity, with higher stands and a more narrow focus than most
The trend lately is that most operate slow, substandard and unfocused. The lack of energy is palatable
When stepping up the pace the excuses are made about degrading quality "we can't possibly move this fast and maintain quality?" But when you raise standards, you get to move fast and raise quality. Higher standards has a compound effect on productivity
Three ideas I keep coming back to:
1. Mediocrity is a killer. Orgs aren't sunk by their worst performers. They're sunk by the B-level work that is tolerated. In mortgages, B-level is the default: it starts small with LOs not explaining impact of points vs credits and compounds into financial negligence
2. 20% better is invisible today. Small improvements are important but don't register. Shaving a day off pre-approval or closing won't change anything with today's tech. Getting a buyer modeled, educated and confident the same afternoon will
3. Frank's 2018 point was that speed is the cheapest differentiator because almost nobody competes on it. That's not the case today. Every lender has an app, near instant approvals and AI. The new gap is how to differentiate real substance & communicate that clearly, fast. A buyer can get a rate in 30 seconds & still have no idea the financial impact of one mortgage strategy over another
