I think a very healthy 1.8 million or so fans would have tuned in for a WNBA Finals Game 6 in primetime. At 12:30 pm ET? Well, it’ll be less, we know that - WNBA needs to channel World Cup/March Madness-esque midday live-sports viewing enthusiasm

I was utterly perplexed to see Game 6 of the WNBA Finals set for *12:30 p.m.* on *Thursday*. 9:30 a.m. for one fanbase. Makes no sense.

@_Brian_Hamilton waxed poetic on the frustration and bafflement that I, alongside many WNBA fans, felt. Great read.

The NBA is formally stepping into the prediction markets ecosystem.

The league announced agreements Monday morning with Kalshi and Polymarket that will allow the companies to use official league data and intellectual property and give the league control over what trades the companies are allowed to offer.

Vividly remember watching that first-ever PTI episode - the most 🤯 sports TV show I had ever seen. 25 years! I unpacked its unique alchemy, with some help from @TonyReali, @cbranch89 and others. Got a lot of great newsletter emails, too.

Filed the sports business newsletter from @TheAthletic HQ in NYC with many colleagues, which is why @cbranch89 made a cameo, in addition to a rumination on @PTI’s place among the top TV shows of the 21st century, World Series, NBA openers & an A+ feature on NFL headsets. Free ⬇️

On today's Athletic Football Show, @peter_king joined me to talk about his new book "The Game," how serendipity shaped his career, the types of stories he wanted to chase at SI, the challenges of modern-day NFL reporting, and a lot more.

This is such an awesome extension from our original CFB roster budget reporting.

I highlighted it in the sports business newsletter that just went out to email subscribers (web version coming at lunchtime), and the team created some amazing tools you can play with.
How much does a college football team’s roster budget matter? We're tracking the results!

So far, teams with a $5M+ advantage have won 68% of the time. When it’s at least $10M, they have won 80% of the time.

And we're updating live through the season:

28 years ago 😱, I had a front-row seat to @peter_king’s MMQB process (still, to me, the GOAT sports journalism franchise).

Really enjoyed our mini-reunion talking about his excellent new book about the NFL, “The Game.”

Really happy for @thejyminveney, who I had the privilege of coaching - awesome player, equally awesome person, and a wonderful family. Will make an instant impact at ODU after what is looking like a memorable season ahead for him and SJC.
2027 @SJCBoysHoops/@teamdurant_AAU CG Jymin Veney has committed to Old Dominion.

HC Mike Jones makes a splash in the league that helped mold him as he snags the No. 5 overall prospect in the @PrepHoopsMD 2027 rankings. Veney is a 6’4” CG w/ positional size, scores it efficiently e a value add defensively w/ his versatility + instincts.

I took my sports business newsletter on the road this week, leading to a “Field of Dreams”-style experience at @NewRyanField (but I let my colleague describe it, without my bias!) Also: Tebowmania at 20 (🫡 TimTeblog ball-knowers) and an exciting internship reveal(!) Free link ⬇️

This was great work by @KaitlynDPohly - made the top of my list of business-adjacent reading recs in the newsletter this am (out to subs an hour ago… web version coming at noon-ish!)
A Nerds Gummy Cluster grilled cheese?
A root beer float dessert poutine?

Across the NHL, teams are turning arena food and drinks into attractions of their own off the ice.

I was inside @NewRyanField last night as an alum and fan, so I’m glad my intrepid colleague @ScottDochterman was in Evanston on behalf of @TheAthletic to take in the full experience and report it out. Like Scott, I was blown away by the vibe (and sound) from the student section.
A travel guide to the new Northwestern stadium: it passes the eye test and holy smokes the Wildcat Wall is a game changer.
