This man on my left is the first Indian to win Boltzmann Medal, the highest honour in Statistical Physics.
And yesterday, ICTP announced that he has been awarded the prestigious Dirac Medal for his contributions to theoretical physics.
But his story is much bigger than the pak Dhar, one of India’s finest theoretical physicists.
He studied at Allahabad University and later went to IIT Kanpur for his master’s, where he decided to pursue physics seriously as a career.
What came next was even more fascinating.
He went to Caltech for his PhD, where he was exposed to some of the greatest minds in physics and even worked with legendary Nobel laureate Richard Feynman as his teaching assistant.
He had everything one could wish for. He could have stayed in the US and built a remarkable career there.
But he chose to return to India.
He came back and contributed deeply to building India’s scientific ecosystem and Today, he serves as a Distinguished Professor at ICTS-TIFR, Bengaluru, where I recently had the privilege of shooting an episode with him.
He is genuinely one of the GOATs of theoritical physics, yet remains incredibly humble and grounded.
Such a proud moment for Indian science.

Interhospital variations in practice and technical outcomes for endoscopic resection of early oesophagogastric adenocarcinoma: multicentre CONGRESS data set analysis
➡️doi.org/10.1093/bjsope…
Using the CONGRESS multicentre registry (2015–22), this study evaluated interhospital ollowing endoscopic resection (ER) for T1 N0 oesophagogastric adenocarcinoma. Among 1215 patients from 28 centres, high-volume centres demonstrated significantly lower rates of R1 resection, procedural complications, and progression to surgery compared with low-volume centres, even after adjustment for case mix. These findings indicate substantial practice variation and suggest a volume-outcome relationship in ER for early OG cancer.

I sometimes receive CT scans from colleagues overseas and am consulted on various cases involving aortic disease. In those situations, I often create my own sketches to think through the surgical approach. Before the operation, I visualize the three-dimensional structure of the se my drawings as a basis for identifying the optimal clamping sites, perfusion points, and potential pitfalls. I firmly believe that this kind of mental and visual preparation is an invaluable part of surgical practice.

Chola Copper Plates dating back to the 11th Century will be repatriated to India from the Netherlands. Took part in the ceremony for the same in the presence of Prime Minister Rob Jetten.
The Chola Copper Plates are a set of 21 large plates largely contain texts in Tamil, one of the most beautiful languages of the world. They relate to the great Rajendra Chola I formalising an oral commitment made by his father, King Rajaraja I. They also showcase the greatness of the Cholas. We in India are immensely proud of the Cholas, their culture and their maritime prowess.
I thank the Government of the Netherlands and Leiden University in particular, where the Copper Plates were kept since the mid-19th century.
