I have a friend who always replies “I’m a plumber” when someone asks what he does. He’s a trauma and emergency surgeon.
a girl at my gym was venting about a guy from a mixer.
“he was super polite, but when i asked what he does, he said he’s a plumber. i really want someone with a corporate career.”
she named the company. it rang a bell, so I looked it up later…

🎀 Meet JSCOR mentee Callahan Wilde, MPH!

With a research background at Memorial Sloan Kettering, she now explores a key gap under Dr. Susan Bahl: How does tumor biology influence breast cancer surgical decisions?

🔬 Could better evidence guide more personalized surgery?

Literally discussing this exact issue at @bmj_latest editors seminar yesterday and today.

The issue of parity in AI use is an important topic.

@KamranAbbasi @TSACO_AAST @bmj_company
The scientific publishing paradox - Authors can share unpublished manuscripts with AI to write them.
Reviewers can't share those same manuscripts with AI to evaluate them.

Same technology. Same confidentiality risks. Different rules. Make it make sense.

@elliotthaut While it may be uncomfortable and unsavory, it is not technically a conflict of interest for a reviewer to suggest citation of their own work.

As @elliotthaut stated, it is the editors who make the journal decision, not the reviewers.

@elliotthaut I recommend the authors discuss work that is the predicate or substantially overlapping their topic, regardless of whether that is mine (sometimes it is).

@elliotthaut @kjkwinger6 Agree, if relevant and valid, it should be cited; maybe be precisely the reason you were asked to review it in the first place…

When doing a peer-review of an article for a medical/surgical journal, you notice a key citation is missing and it happens to be your seminal work on the topic. What do you do?

What do journal editors think?
