Clayface is a BIG surprise.
I went in basically blind with two buddies I regularly hit Comic-Con with.
None of us watched the trailers.
That absolutely helped.
This movie is wild.
Gruesome.
Disturbing.
At times downright disgusting.
And I mean that in the best way ries is fantastic as Matt Hagen.
The special effects are excellent.
The runtime is under two hours.
And the movie moves.
There’s always something happening.
The biggest surprise?
Clayface barely feels like a James Gunn DCU movie.
It feels much closer to The Batman, The Penguin, Joker and even Gotham.
Matt Reeves’ influence is all over it.
No forced comedy.
No goofy treatment of the character.
No divisive messaging taking over the story.
And most importantly:
Clayface is actually a VILLAIN.
Not an anti-hero.
Not a misunderstood good guy.
The movie lets Matt Hagen become a full-blown psychopath and serial killer.
That’s where Sony went wrong with movies like Morbius and Venom.
Clayface doesn’t make that mistake.
The body horror is nasty.
I actually had to cover my eyes a few times.
And by the ending, we finally get the giant, monstrous, shape-shifting Clayface fans know from the comics and animation.
It looks great.
I had a couple complaints, but nothing major.
This is exactly the kind of DC movie I want more of.
Dark.
Serious.
Comic-book focused.
And willing to let the villain be the villain.
Go see Clayface.
8/10.

@cosmicbooknews *spoiler comment maybe*
when he attacks the mob guys in the club, gets the crowed to dance with him, and confidently starts to show off some of his abilities is when the movie becomes fun to watch.

@cosmicbooknews I can see this Clayface going up against Battinson at the beginning or end of a movie. Nothing about the tone of this movie matches Gunn's vibe.

@cosmicbooknews The probability of me going to see Clayface would skyrocket … if I knew that Batman would actually face off against his iconic villain.

@cosmicbooknews Not sure if this is a ploy but if you are being genuine and honest it’s commendable you didn’t let your bias get in the way. Credit where it’s due,

@cosmicbooknews Yeah. That's a pretty spot-on assessment. I rarely agree with everything a reviewer says, but I back everything you said.

@cosmicbooknews Everytime I see a grandiose review for a Gunn film, it reminds me how I was told Superman was absolute cinema and Supergirl was the beginning of the end of Marvel… and we all know how that worked out.

@cosmicbooknews If you see this movie, you are helping James Gunn. Watch in digital media when he is gone.
