Every diagnosis begins with a person. Every procedure requires extraordinary precision. Every outcome has the power to change a life.
Today marks the start of #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth.
Throughout August, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons will celebrate this That Changes Lives, by sharing the stories, people and innovations that define one of medicine's most demanding specialties.
You'll go behind the scenes of neurosurgery to see the dedication, training and teamwork behind every operation. We'll highlight how new technologies and groundbreaking research are expanding what's possible for patients. We'll share stories of resilience, recovery and hope, while recognizing the neurosurgeons, care teams, researchers, educators and advocates working every day to advance neurological care.
Whether you've been touched by neurosurgery as a patient, caregiver, physician, trainee, industry partner or supporter, your voice is part of this story.
Join us throughout the month. Watch, learn, share and help shine a light on the expertise, compassion and innovation that change lives every day.
Visit the Neurosurgery Awareness Month hub to explore resources and learn how you can participate: aans.org/about/neurosur…
To our neurosurgical community: We invite you to help tell the story of our specialty. Share your experiences, your patients' successes, your research, innovations, educational moments, advocacy efforts and the people who inspire you. Use #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth so we can celebrate your contributions and amplify the incredible work happening across the field. Together, we can help the world better understand the impact of neurosurgery.

Presented at the @AANSNeuro Annual Scientific Meeting 2026 in San Antonio on MIS deformity—sharing nuances for ALIF + percutaneous screws and how to avoid complications.
Key pearls:
• Joystick technique → access steep L5–S1 with high-riding pubic bone
• Lateral surgery offset ger in high sacral slope/high-grade slips and better than angled ALIF instruments
• Open collapsed discs methodically → release → distract → then trial
• Preserve endplates → curettes only
• Reduce slips → 2 screws down + rod-based “springboard” technique after navigated facet releases
Pitfalls:
• Overcorrection → stretch neuropraxia (if too much height) / early ASD (if too much lordosis)
• Hyperlordotic cages → iatrogenic foraminal stenosis, patient-specific cages can help as you can optimize both segmental lordosis and posterior disc height at the same time
Bottom line:
ALIF is the "Rolls-Royce" for L5-S1 and L5-S1 "plus" procedures. With proper planning + exposure, even steep angles and complex lumbosacral disc configurations shouldn’t preclude a safe ALIF.
