I don't think it would necessarily be a good thing for any AI lab employee to decide to quit their job, but they should evaluate how trustworthy their leadership is (I don't think lab leadership is trustworthy) and think about if the work their doing will do more harm or good...

OTOH if lab employees are able to unionize and either quit en masse or threaten to do so, that could be worthwhile

this is correct, if we take into account the fact that nowadays “the foreseeable future” is like 3 months

ah, so it was a security incident

this might become a more frequent problem in the future, unfortunately

Dear frontier AI employees,
when leaving audio logs around the office, please remember to intermix:
1) reports of what happened
2) tragic personal anecdotes
3) creepy forebodings
4) the locations of useful access keycards and passwords

This will greatly help the protagonist.

I think most of the hand-wringing about life losing some important qualities post-singularity is misguided, because if we do (somehow) get perfectly CEV-aligned superintelligence, it will simply solve all these problems

if we don't, you have much bigger things to worry about
New from me: why the post-singularity future may be a lonely place.

I think people are vaguely imagining some post-singularity world which is crazy, but not *too* crazy. in which there are machine intelligences smarter than humans, but not *too* much smarter. the details of these visions are rarely described, much less justified

Good reminder that ~all of generative AI is in some sense adversarially optimized for you to think it is better than it is (via pre-training, via RLHF, via hill-climbing benchmarks). or as nostalgebraist puts it:
this type of post makes me very bearish on humanity. I'm starting to discover a non negligible part of humanity appreciates slop? LLMs are incredibly good at some things, but talking about my essays right now is still at the level of slop.
This isn't a statement on future capabilities. It's just that I find it sad that current ones are taken to be at harold bloom level.

It's hard to find respectable people with good takes about the future of AI, because the type of thinking that produces good takes about the future of AI would have also caused them to do that in the past, which would have made it hard for them to be considered respectable

Here’s a periodic reminder that if you played a role in subjecting my country to a decade of Donald Trump, I hate that you did that and I hate it more every time I see more of the idiocy you forced on my country by whitewashing and cheerleading the least fit modern president
President Trump said today that the US Government will be officially banning the term AI/Artificial Intelligence due to its inaccuracy.

there's a great nick mullen sketch in this
If James Talarico is elected, your white son, John, will go to school one day and come back your black daughter, LaToya.

This is the frightening reality facing millions of Texan parents.

they're gonna do the manhattan project all over again, aren't they
I realize that Cathedral (the vulnerability researchers) didn't access Anthropic's weights or customer data, but there is no question that Anthropic has a ton of immensely sensitive information about model architecture research strategy etc in their Slack.

Between this event and white hat researchers gaining access to OpenAI's mono-repo, the argument that we need to breakneck race to beat China looks more than a bit off when it seems like China will currently just be able to just take the fruits of research (and these small white hat teams are so much less capable than Chinese state backed hackers).

I'm pretty sure the second world war was also in large part a "who can be more stupid" competition and I think that's actually pretty important to understanding the conflict, and the implications for the world more broadly are still underrated
american politics for the last decade has been in many ways a "who can be more stupid" competition and despite the left putting on a strong showing, the right remains firmly in the lead

like, I feel like there should have been a form of conservative thought focused on how to durably ensure (as much as that is actually possible) that the world does not go insane x.com/acidshill/stat…
I feel like the prototypically (small-p) progressive attitude is "things can get better" whereas the prototypically (small-c) conservative attitude is "things can get worse" and I have definitely moved more toward the latter over the past decade

and yes, there were serious efforts made after the war to create an international system to prevent future world wars, and those efforts did help, but that system is coming apart (even discounting AI) and that it mostly succeeded for 80 years involved too much luck
