I've joined the @solidity_lang team at @argotorg as Developer Advocate!

They say there's nothing like dealing with a high-severity compiler bug to get yourself integrated into a new team, and that's exactly what happened in my second week. The explainer is linked in the next post.

More than a decade in the Ethereum ecosystem means I've followed Solidity's evolution closely, both the language itself and how developers use it in practice. I'm excited to bring that perspective to the team and contribute to the continued development of Solidity and Core Solidity.

I want to hear from you!
What are your biggest pain points with Solidity?
What features do you love?
What would make your life easier?
What would you like to see in the Core Solidity std lib?
Ping me here or DM me, and we can have a chat.
At the very least, take 5 minutes to fill out the Solidity Developer Survey linked in the next post.

The Solidity team is full of incredibly smart people who care deeply about what they're building. It's motivating to be part of that, and I'm happy to be back contributing to the foundations of Ethereum.

Great start to the week.
First, my kid woke up sick, so we have to cancel/postpone our 3-week trip that was supposed to start today.
I just received an email from my phone carrier that, even though I have hidden my address, number, and name, they got hacked and leaked it 🫠

look the foundational problem with ethereum protocol design is that most of the people designing the protocol don't actually use ethereum themselves. you can't fix the right things if you don't use your own fucking product. you don't have enough skin in the game if you don't personally depend on the system you're designing & stand to lose money when it breaks. i understand, everything looks great from an ivory tower lol. things look very different when you're actually on the ground dealing with the consequences. if you don't use ethereum yourself but still think you're qualified to design its protocol, you're playing god with a system you don't have to live with and whose consequences you don't have to suffer.

Solidity v0.8.38 is out.

This release fixes a low-severity bug in the Yul optimizer, speeds up the Yul optimizer, and warns about identifiers in Yul and inline assembly that are going to be reserved starting from the Amsterdam EVM version.

Let's all just stay off the internet today.
So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

so I'm going to tell you a secret

our team actually cares an absurd amount about building private money without backdoors

if that means we have to keep out the terrorists, so we can have privacy for the good guys, so be it

we're cypherpunks, not anarchists 🫡

Instead of using 384 bit random private keys, they used private keys like the super secret, unguessable number 4.

They are a cryptography company. They had one job. They're selling Post-Quantum Cryptography while doing shit like this lmao.
‼️ BREAKING: The private keys of 8 certificates from Indian certificate authority eMudhra were compromised, Mozilla says. Firefox blocked them within 3 hours.

Each key should be a 116-digit number, but one was just 4.

Anyone can guess them and forge HTTPS certs for any website.

New frontend, same backend

Core Solidity is a new frontend for solc. It lowers to Yul and shares the optimizer and code generator with @solidity_lang today, so backend work on stack-too-deep and compile times helps both.

Link to the playground in the comment below.

A good reminder that keeping your code closed-source for security purpose is a bad strategy

If you distribute a binary, treat it as if attackers have the source code
1/ As someone who have worked on reverse engineering for 10+ years, I've never seen this much excitement around it. Great work, @morluto and @reatools!

Since RE is having such a moment 🔥, I figured I'd share some updates from sre-bench.lol to help you pick the right model.

I wrote code. Now I face 45 years in prison because others misused it.

Code that no one controls. Code that no one can change or shut down.

Yet somehow, I’m being held responsible for what others chose to do with it.
I feel like the whole BoA money laundering thing should be talked about, but what's left to say?

I spent a year in prison for not filling out a form around selling Bitcoin and got in trouble because someone two degrees separate from me allegedly used it to launder funds. The amount in question was around $30k.

BoA launders $5b and has to give one fifth of it back to the government. No jail for anyone.

This is America.

A lot of interesting things are happening in Core Solidity right now.
Read the blog post to see where the language stands right now, and try the playground.
Most importantly, if you have any feedback, reach out to me. I'd love to hear it or give you an in-depth demo.
We published a status update on Core Solidity: what the language can do today, what is still missing, what the community told us, and what comes next.
