Announcing FirstMass.net, the first crowd-sourced project (that I know of) showing when & where Mass was first said in each part of what would come to be known as the United States of America!

Have a look-see. Know of an early mass? Submit it! I'll review, edit, post!

It's funny AI made programmers obsolete first. As an infrastructure guy, I always perceived they were the elite. They built their applications on the (compute/storage/network) road I constructed. Even once in the cloud, they still needed me

I'm sure it'll come for me soon too

@_CatholicWest There’d be more of us studying history, philosophy, art etc.. if they’d stop bombarding everyone with easy access vices like sports gambling, porn and short form TikTok gossip videos.

Many Catholics today don't know that at the time of the Protestant Reformation & early European expansion in the Americas, Catholic Christendom wasn't just European but extended into Central Africa.
Meet MVEMBA A NZINGA / AFONSO I (c. 1456-1543), warrior, King of Kongo, & Catholic convert who adopted some Portuguese customs at his court, maintained diplomatic ties with Portugal & the Papal States, & had a son, Henrique, educated in Europe & appointed as Kongo's 1st bishop.

AI haters are fine I get the skepticism. But I wouldn't have been able to build first Mass without it.

With AI coding tools, I did it in a day and now I'm spreading that First Mass knowledge. It got the technology out of my way so I could tell that story.

If there's no money in humanities now (there isn't), then AI isn't going to fix that.

If we capture some % of the productive economic output of AI & redistribute it, humanities could suddenly enjoy quite a renaissance as people suddenly have time to pursue it.
AI is either going to destroy the humanities or create a world where people will actually have the time and money to study the humanities. I just don't see a way that the humanities will "muddle through" the AI crisis.

13yo now wants a Claude pro subscription so he can develop his own games because of course.

He’s not going to be using mine that’s for sure. Maybe I’ll give him one of the Chinese models
My 13yo son and his friends vibe-coded a full clone of like a King's Quest style adventure game on their PCs. I don't even know how they're doing this. They email HTML files to each other to play, so when there's a new version out, they send a new email. But somehow they have multiplayer working off the HTML file which is stored on the C:\ drive it's wild.

Refreshing.
Milwaukee’s Archbishop Grob: “I feel a heavy sadness, not only over the pain I caused, but also for the fact that something so sacred to a group of religious leaders, prayer to our Heavenly Father, would be manipulated in that way. We came in good faith to try to work for the betterment of our fellow human beings, to ease their suffering, to build up the common good, and to pray with a president, not to pose for a political photo opportunity to benefit the few. We should never have been put in that position by the White House. I did not go without reservations. I wish I had heeded them. Please know that I have heard these concerns, understand how I caused them, and I apologize for any damage my actions have done.” archmil.org/posts/a-public…

Bruenig’s point this weekend stuck with me: if AI wipes out white-collar jobs, perhaps the meritocracy dies with them. White-collar apocalypse could destabilize things so much that we get income egalitarianism or something like UBI.

This is the trouble with AI. It's making economically valuable work much cheaper & faster to do. It's a race to the bottom, and firms that don't use it will suffer competitively while their rivals ship faster and cheaper (but not necessarily better) code.
We obviously haven’t had the major jobs wipeout yet. But you read stuff like this. And you read what economics students themselves are saying about working with AI (ht @odavis_h) and it’s hard not to feel like the seismic shift is on its way.

Look what your boy got from a reader. The 2007 hard copy of the History of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles & its precursor jurisdictions. Out of print this book is hard to find. Composed by Msr Weber, who was LAs great archivist for many decades. Also contains photo plus back200+ parishes. Enormously grateful to my reader! 🙏🏼

We know as much as we do about this remarkable medieval Englishwoman -- who lived through some of the violence of the Crusades -- because her brother, Thomas of Froidmont, a Cistercian monk who had been in the service of St. Thomas à Becket, took the time to write her story: "Hodoeporicon et percale Margarite Iherosolimitane" ("The Itinerary and Perils of Margaret of Jerusalem").
Meet MARGARET OF BEVERLEY (d. c. 1215), an Englishwoman who, during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, got caught up in Saladin's Siege of Jerusalem in 1187 & helped defend the city until it fell. Enslaved by Muslims but freed, she explored Europe & became a Cistercian nun in France.

BABY CRYING COUNTER inside a TV spying on you ffs this shit has to be regulated out of existence
turns out it classifies what audio it hears, before reporting back to samsung.

sensor preferences, dog-barking and baby-crying event counters, and camera streaming duration are built into telemetry paths.

I took a surprising amount of shit in group chats for buying my blue check. “But it was on sale,” I protested meekly.

Now we go back to the hard way.
