turns out it classifies what audio it hears, before reporting back to samsung.
sensor preferences, dog-barking and baby-crying event counters, and camera streaming duration are built into telemetry paths.

this is pretty evil and clever.
so if your samsung TV model doesnt have a microphone, it will look for connected devices with one, such as a soundbar or a connected bluetooth device.
this gets shipped off to bixby.

@log4j and we paid ourselves for this spying infrastructure...
we paid for the Samsung spying hardware to prostitute our privacy at home.
TVs, monitors in EU Gov offices, all being recorded and shared overseas...
So despicable... does the @EU_Commission know about that ?

@log4j No wonder these things are so slow. They are computing and reporting on every damn event that happens within a mile of them

WTF, $3000 Samsung TV has an always-on mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, and ships your data to Samsung + 400 partners.
Bro Rooted a brand-new 2025 Samsung TV after noticing absurdly targeted ads.
Firmware was locked down, so zero-days it was. n found: always-on voice service, ACR, geo, full telemetry pipeline, and four separate DRM systems.
This isn’t a bug, It’s the product bro.

@log4j This is fucked
I’ve always been a believer of “they’re not listening to you, that would be a waste if an insane amount of compute”

@log4j Dog-barking and baby-crying event counters is the detail that got me. I assumed my TV was just listening for a wake word. It is running a full audio classification pipeline and reporting the labels home. My next TV gets the network cable treatment.

@log4j Heinous shit
Companies should not be able to surveil us at this level
It should be illegal
If we lived in a country that had even a modicum of normal consumer protection laws, this would’ve been enshrined as illegal like 10+ years ago
Second best time is now

@log4j lol, they're noting your posts now
"No documentation describes automatic detection or audio routing from arbitrary connected Bluetooth devices."
I guess no public documentation means it's not a thing 😂

@log4j This explains a lot. TVs aren't the product anymore, it's our privacy what they're selling now.

@log4j man and people were really calling you schizo for thinking there was spyware with listening capabilities
They were really like "akchually 160 IQ engineers have just designed 6D tachyonic statistical adware, you're just crazy"

@log4j Appreciate you shedding some light onto this matter. Last night I was able to gain root access to my Samsung TV and crippled it to a point where it just does what any conventional TV used to do back in our day: play video and audio
It's time to take back our devices!

@log4j What I don’t get is why someone would sign up to be a programmer for Samsung and not immediately quit based on pure principle due to the fact that they are contributing directly to spyware

@log4j dear samsung: a tv that counts my dog barking and reports it to you is not a tv. it's a snitch with a screen. per the thread.
