“This finding underscores the urgent need for brain-specific biomarkers that allow earlier intervention to protect the developing brain from the hidden consequences of gestational iron deficiency, as recovery of blood iron levels alone may not reflect recovery of the developing brain.”

Congratulations to Dr. Maiken Nedergaard! She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine for her discovery of the glymphatic system, which has reshaped scientists’ understanding of how the brain clears waste and the critical role of sleep💤

How does she approach her own earch shapes her daily routines, what she’s learned about sleep, and why protecting sleep is essential for brain health 👉 urmed.info/4yx9EgV

The science behind sleep and how and why to get enough of it👇

“non-REM would fill the toilet up and REM sleep would flush it,” said @LaurenHablitz, PhD, who works with Dr. Maiken Nedergaard. Nedergaard discovered the glymphatic system in 2012. This system it clears our brain of waste as we sleep

I absolutely loved sitting down with my wonderful colleague Ania Majewska for "Neuroscience Perspectives". We talked about her remarkable science, but also the extraordinary life journey behind it—from Poland, to Kuwait and the UK, and ultimately to the United States. A fascinating scientist, an inspiring colleague, and a truly great story. @URNeuroscience

Could understanding how inflammation impacts the brain’s immune system provide a new treatment for neurodegenerative disease?

URochester researchers Felix Yarovinsky, MD, M. Kerry O’Banion, MD, PhD, and Ania Majewska, PhD, aim to understand how NEW microglia, that emerge during This research was selected for the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience pilot grant program and will be supported by the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience Research Pilot and Feasibility Program urmc.rochester.edu/del-monte-neur…

Have you ever thought about all the neural activity that must coordinate for you to pick up your cup of coffee ☕?

Assistant Professor @GabriellaSterne and Associate Professor Jaime Cardenas have. Their project is one of the 2026 Schmitt Program in Integrative Neuroscience pients. Their research project will study how the structure of premotor circuits contributes to reaching motor control using behavior studies, circuit modeling, and neural imaging.

Since 2015, the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience has supported 85 novel research projects through its pilot program: urmc.rochester.edu/del-monte-neur…
