For 52-year-old Luiz Claudio Pereira da Conceição, home is where his life comes together. He has lived in the same house in Vila do João, a community in Complexo da Maré, Rio de Janeiro, since he was a child. Today, he shares that home with his 24-year-old son, Vinicius.
But for wn home was a daily struggle.
Luiz contracted polio when he was just one year old, leaving him with a leg disability. Simple, everyday tasks were made harder because parts of his house simply weren't accessible.
"Before the renovation, my bathroom wasn't accessible," Luiz shares. "In the utility area and the kitchen, there was no flooring or paint. There was nothing. It was really messy."
An accessible home isn't a luxury—it is a fundamental part of dignity, safety, and a better urban future.
Ahead of #WorldCitiesDay, his story highlights the importance of regenerating cities by making existing homes more accessible, inclusive and safe. This is central to this year’s theme, “Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All,” and to ensuring everyone can live with dignity.

After fleeing insecurity in Burkina Faso, Salamata Bagagnan and her family found a place to start again in Nagréongo.
Through the IPDCA-BF project, funded by the Government of Japan, UN-Habitat is helping displaced host communities in Nagréongo rebuild their lives with safer homes and better access to water and livelihood opportunities.
