The reporter who exposed Theranos loved the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary but says its ‘artistry’ shouldn’t obscure the fraud fortune.com/2026/10/20/joh…

Calling “You Can See Everything” not a documentary turned out to be a hotter take than I realized. Beyond my original @statnews piece. Here’s further explanation, on LinkedIn for no character limit

@matthewherper @RennBrown @AlexaKilroy Yes! I really did love the film (mostly the second half) but there were ways Nathan was deceived that the viewer would have no way of knowing , and maybe Nathan himself didn’t even know (emphasis on maybe)

@RennBrown @matthewherper @AlexaKilroy I feel like we’re saying the same thing. I’m saying he chooses not to pursue the truth about what was on the table in order to make more compelling art. But I also wanted to point out he was deceived in a way the viewer would never be able to know

@tylekurner The film intentionally ignores truth in the pursuit of ambiguity. And that makes for beautiful art.

@molls @maggieserota I have no issue with the reenactments, they were probably my favorite part.

@tucktucktuck96 It wasn’t parts of the device we used to test patients

@crogers_htown Thank you! Really appreciate it. Good to watch the HBO doc before YCSE, should be a prerequisite in my opinion.

@dangaron The question is: did he know? Was he deceived, or did he chose to let Elizabeth deceive us? The film is infinitely more interesting without you seeing the device we actually used

@MichaelMaiello @matthewherper Yes. And her continuing to hide the device we used to test patients says a lot about her character

@DanEhrlich @ledwards When the WSJ started publishing, Theranos still had 100s of millions in the bank. If the board fired Elizabeth, put in place a competent CEO, acquired new tech, settled patient lawsuits, and scoped the vision… I think Theranos could have produced something valuable to society

@ledwards A future version that was never completed and never used on patients. The Edison could only run 1 test at a time, and was only capable of running one type of test (immunoassay). And could not be used without other equipment (centrifuge, hand pipetting, tecan robot)

Amid the cinephiles' lofty debates about truth and art, it's worth listening to @TylerShultz_'s take on the film and on Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Holmes is “almost unrecognizable” in Nathan Fielder’s documentary, “You Can See Everything,” to Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz: “The woman that I saw on screen looked, frankly, like a broken woman.”

Shultz tells @gayleking and @norahodonnell about his reaction to about Theranos in 2015 and why the documentary is garnering sympathy for Holmes, who is serving a more than 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors: “She is not playing victim. She is an actual victim.”

Not the device I worked with 12 hours a day, not the device we hid from regulators, not the device we used to knowingly give patients false medical information. The device she showed him was not the reason she went to prison.

I actually enjoyed “You can see everything” but people need to understand that this is not a documentary. And the device Elizabeth showed Nathan WAS NOT THE DEVICE

If you’re planning to see the @a24 @nathanfielder documentary about Elizabeth - after the movie, imagine having thanksgiving dinner with her AFTER calling out her lies.

For years I was living in the twilight zone. I hope this film gives you a 3 hour taste of what that was like
