Stelco is efficient and can make steel cheaper than it’s US competitors, so its competitor purchased it and is trying to shut it down.

David Cochrane: Am I understanding you correctly there? It was a defensive acquisition?

Olivia Chow “duped” the pollsters, says Star columnist
How? Never explains. Maybe she got her supporters to tell pollsters they were voting for Bradford as a ruse?
We’re to believe the conservative ground game was so weak that Olivia’s team could shift the result 13 points?

Olivia Chow duped the pollsters, fooled the pundits and gave progressives a scare. How did she do that, exactly? Four factors from the aftermath in Wednesday's column thestar.com/opinion/star-c…

I had hoped this result might end this but clearly it won't.
Chow has consistently and relentlessly called out hate crime and prejudice of all kinds - especially for the Jewish community. She has upped police presence, set-up command posts, expanded police hate crime units and - notably - taken a lot of heat for backing the (likely unconstitutional) bubble-zone laws - in a good faith effort to address community concerns.
And in response she's gotten abuse, ridicule, insults (often racist). She gets Ezra Levant bursting into meetings with synagogue leaders to scream insults. She gets a millionaire in a MAGA hat claiming she is a moral failure while making racist insults.
And she gets completely disingenuous claims that she shouldn't speak on foreign affairs coupled with claims that her jobs requires her to March with Israel - and support Trump's invasion of Iran.
She's better than I am. She still shows up - knowing that it gains her nothing.
If people want to take their political cues from political opportunists like Warren Kinsella, if they want to fund political hacks who sow division for partisan advantage, than they will face rejection.
But that is not a rejection of the Jewish community in this City. And I think those who claim it does are doing their community, and the whole City, a grave disservice.

My reaction to last night's result in my hometown:
"A vote for Chow was, if nothing else, a vote that didn’t care about what Toronto’s Jewish community has suffered. In the overwhelming majority of cases, I suspect people never even thought about it at all."

With most incumbents projected to keep their seats in Toronto, save for a few exceptions, here’s what Council looks like for re-elected Mayor Olivia Chow:
With Wards 4, 5, 11, 13, and 14 likely electing non-incumbent, unabashed, and progressive candidates, Toronto City Council pared to the previous cohort of councilors.
- Green representing councilors who largely oppose Chow in contested votes
- Blue representing centrists who side with the Mayor sometimes
- Purple representing Mayor Chow's closest allies in council
- Red representing newly elected councilors who are more progressive than the prior ones occupying that seat
- And Grey for Shaun Chen (Ward 23), a former Liberal MP who defeated the incumbent Myers (a Chow ally) but can't really be classified into any boxes yet.

532,201 votes were cast for Olivia Chow alone in 2026.
