many of our customers make use of namespaces to model tenants (encryption, performance, isolation)

we've been working on significantly evolving the caching layer.
we're redesigning our caching tier

current: whole files evicted in the order written (FIFO)
new: smaller chunks, least-read evicted first (LFU)

on a cluster where a small fraction of data gets most of the reads, this improves byte hit ratio by ~2x → p99 query latency drops ~2x

YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING

is what I told @zebriez this summer. but this time you won't be left guessing who we are, because she's articulated it beautifully.

colossus.com/article/sane-a…
I was drawn to Silicon Valley because of people's healthy relationship to work.

connection to mission. friends. ambition. financial security. hard work. but also free time. positive sum vibes. pride in being a part of it. joy.

this is no longer the case. my friends have gone mad. and there's almost nowhere to hide.

refusing to accept this fate, I went searching for safe havens.

I found (at least) one in ottawa and spent the last 6 months with @turbopuffer where they've got silicon valley chops, canadian kindness, and danish sense of humor. it's been the perfect medicine.

I wrote about it in @colossusmag

models do not produce simplicity. they hedge, for completeness.

that's your value. the lack of this skill is called AI slop.

3/7 of queries on v3 are now at or better than parity with v2... and they're just getting started.

turbopuffer.com/v3
filters on tpuf v3 are now faster than prod (v2)

instead of filtering row-at-a-time, v3 will push compute down to storage to find shortcuts. example: if all rows in a block have the same value for x, then x=8 reduces to one check

“I’m sorry, but this requires more compute on your end before I can react”

is one of the more annoying things I might response to people on the team. regrettably, there is only so much founder compute available.

make things easy to react to
the more compute used at write time, the less required at read time

true in human communications & databases

3 years ago today 🫡
After 4 months of focused work, I'm launching what is, to my knowledge, the first truly serverless vector database: turbopuffer.com

$1/month per million vectors (10-70x cheaper than others)
$4 per million queries

tpuf v3 is going to be a monumental change in what turbopuffer is capable of. a new foundation for speed and eng velocity.

it now passes tests—watch us grind performance over the coming days and weeks.
we're changing tpuf's storage architecture so we can keep pushing the search frontier

the new engine (v3) now passes CI, but we have to make it fast before we ship it to prod

we're grinding query plans in public until v3 wins on everything

GTM is a whole company function
everyone at WarpStream sells, but @turbopuffer takes it to the next level

the employees will look you in the eyes at a dinner party after just meeting you five seconds ago and ask “does your company puf? should you be puffin’?” with a completely straight face
