Some spacecraft become history while they're still doing the job.

Odyssey is still studying Mars and relaying rover data, 25 years after arriving. The next big rover discovery may come home through a very old orbiter.
On Oct. 24, 2001, NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft slipped into orbit around the Red Planet.

25 years later, it's still conducting science and relaying messages from the rovers, making it the longest-operating orbiter ever at a planet beyond Earth.  ½

Saturn looks almost unfinished here. The rings we usually draw as a huge oval have become a line.

Cassini was looking from just above their plane. Same planet, a very different seat in the audience.

Saturn’s rings, as thin as paper

This image of Saturn and Titan was captured on May 6, 2012, by the Cassini spacecraft.

The interesting bit is the little tool that only five people need. A telescope booking page. A lab rota. The club inventory that lives in a chaotic spreadsheet.

More of those ideas might actually get built now.

A Moon ship, from a diver's point of view.

U.S. Navy divers photographed Orion's heat shield after Artemis II splashed down in April. NASA's follow-up analysis found it performed as expected.

The white cap is as interesting as the ash.

It's a pileus cloud. NASA says it may be water condensing as air rises and cools above the eruption. The ISS caught this view of Sarychev Peak in 2009.
This is what an erupting volcano looks like from space.

Built for Saturn V. Reused for the Space Shuttle. Now firing a new rocket's upper stage.

Some of the most useful space technology is the infrastructure that outlives the rockets.
🔥 Just another day at Stennis. Stage 2 successfully completed its first integrated hotfire!

The A2 test stand was originally built in the 60s to support Saturn V Upper Stage testing (S-II). It was later reconfigured to be a single engine test stand for Shuttle Main Engine .

The last Saturn V Stage test occurred October 30, 1970 on A2. It has been 55 years, 11 months, and 17 days since A2 supported stage testing capability.

As of this morning, it is now 0 days.

We draw borders on maps. The water ignores them.

Those swirls are moving heat, salt and nutrients around the planet. The ocean is doing a lot more than filling the space between continents.
One of the most detailed visualizations ever created of Earth’s ocean currents, released by NASA.

Enceladus might keep ocean samples inside salt crystals.

In a lab, natron trapped pockets of brine. Finding similar crystals on the moon could tell us about the ocean beneath its ice.

Some stars would look green up close.

Sodium in this white dwarf's dense atmosphere absorbs orange light, shifting the colour we'd see.

Mercury has a tail. Sunlight pushes sodium from its thin exosphere into a glowing trail.

That smile is bent starlight.

The eyes are galaxies. The arcs are light from galaxies behind the cluster, bent by its gravity. Hubble caught spacetime acting like a giant lens.

The cloud that hides its own newborn stars.

Webb's infrared view reveals young stars in NGC 7129, 3,300 light-years away. Gold traces hot atomic hydrogen; red traces cooler molecular hydrogen. These are mapped infrared colours.

When 2 white dwarfs collide...

This is Nebula Pa 30, the cosmic fireworks remnant of a rare "Type Iax" supernova.

First recorded in 1181, it left behind a super-hot "zombie" white dwarf star.
