Scotland helped discover how to teach children to read. England acted on the evidence. Scotland failed to follow through.

In Why Reading Matters, Sir Nick Gibb exposes how educational orthodoxy obstructed phonics reform.

When ideology trumps evidence, children pay the price.

"An editorial in the Scotsman dubbed systematic phonics ‘the holy grail in education’. Its author suggested the success of this phonics scheme might spur an embrace of whole-class, teacher-led lessons more broadly but was clearly aware of the strength of ideological opposition. They sagely observed: ‘The modern orthodoxy of childcentred education is a phrase with great power [...] even though the Clackmannanshire and other research begs the question of whether this method actually delivers’."

Carolyn Brown @cbbroony argues that Scottish Government guidance on transgender pupils risks undermining the fundamental purpose of education: developing children's understanding through truth, evidence and reason.

"One primary harm resulting from the imposition of what is in effect a lie is the erosion of trust between teachers, children and their families. When adults lie to children, they risk damaging their credibility as reliable sources of information. Children who initially view teachers as authoritative may begin to question the veracity of all statements made in that educational context."

Too true. Our politicians could do with reading up on Enlightenment thinkers too.
Scotland gave the world Hume, Smith and Ferguson.

But how many Scottish pupils seriously encounter the ideas of the Enlightenment?

We celebrate our intellectual inheritance while too often neglecting to teach it.

A country cannot live indefinitely on the reputation of its past.

Knowledge is not an obstacle to education. It is its foundation.

History, science, literature and mathematics open up worlds beyond children's immediate experience.

Scotland's curriculum must strengthen these disciplines, not subordinate them to fashionable causes.

Scotland does not lack evidence of educational decline. It lacks the willingness to confront what has gone wrong.

More reforms, more rhetoric and more excuses will not restore standards.

Our latest editorial argues for something better: evidence, knowledge and a serious commitment to educational renewal.

Absolutely bloody shameful. Scotland’s children get one education. When the results expose how badly they are being served, those responsible question the value of measuring them.

Read Lindsay Paterson’s Lessons from Scottish Schools Why Knowledge Matters. His argument is omoted in the name of equality have weakened attainment and widened inequality.

Neglecting knowledge does particular damage to children who depend on school to provide what their families cannot. There is nothing progressive about leaving them knowing less.

I recognise the pattern from addiction policy. Institutions defend their reputations, while the ministers elected to hold them accountable supply the excuses. Evidence becomes an inconvenience to be explained away. Challenging failure becomes an attack on the supposedly compassionate principles behind it.

It takes extraordinary arrogance to preside over declining standards and widening inequality while still congratulating yourself on your progressive principles.
First they came for the teaching unions.
And I cheered.
Then they came for the rest of the McBlob.
And I cheered again.

Never has humanity's intellectual inheritance been so accessible.

Great books. Historic archives. World-class lectures. International communities of learning.

The tragedy would be to possess all these opportunities while offering children an increasingly impoverished education.

Councils are paying for the services of companies like this to deliver one-off sessions or assemblies and courses for teachers and pupils. Why? Listening to others, being polite to everyone, or self-reflection have nothing to do with a radical political ideology that basically including the schools and councils that fund its activists) are systemically racist. Does anyone in the Department of Education have oversight of this development in schools, or know what public mandate they have? To many of us, this looks like indoctrination, not education. @LucyMPowell @LauraTrottMP @SuellaBraverman @ScotUnionEd @ProtectTeach

Has @kmckenna63 submitted his proposals to Education Scotland as part of the Curriculum Improvement Cycle?

I’d be ditching the PISA assessment and replace it with our own version. Let’s call it the Programme for Internal Scottish Horizons (PISH). @kmckenna63

PISA may not be perfect, but due to the Scottish Governments failure to collect meaningful data, other than marking its own work, we have to start somewhere. A close analysis of what works south of the border and what can be improved here should be the way forward.

There was a tradition in Scotland, albeit not perfect, of expanding an academic education to everyone. Of a cultured community, through the subjects. A tradition destroyed by the supporters of Curriculum for Excellence.
There is no chance of Scottish education improving until such time as the teaching unions are proscribed. The head of the EIS - the largest union - is proudly anti-knowledge and rigour, preferring a “holistic education for peace and prosperity”. FFS.
