Sens @HawleyMO and @SenBlumenthal wrote Google's Sundar Pichai on how the company's AI tools are impacting classrooms.
“We cannot repeat the mistakes of social media platforms where products are pushed onto children putting profit ahead of young peoples’ best interest.”

Google keeps repeating the same excuse: that app store competition compromises user safety. Meanwhile, Google let a fake Chrome app pay its way to the top of its search results and amass over 100k downloads before doing anything about it. Openness and security can coexist. When gatekeepers face zero meaningful competition, they only act to mitigate bad PR. Consumers and developers deserve real choice.

Authors sue Meta for copyright infringement, alleging that Meta considered spending up to $100 million to license "gold standard training data" before deciding it would be "faster and cheaper" to simply pirate the content.
Meta's capex budget for 2026 is $130-145 billion.

YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat should adopt the terms won in the Meta settlement.
Congress should pass the App Store Accountability Act to address app store harms. And consider bills like the GUARD and CHATBOT Acts to tackle AI companions.
My latest for @DigitalProInst 👇

Great piece by our own Senior Fellow @SayreEvan. The Meta settlement should be the floor for the whole industry. And social media is only one front. App stores, games, and AI chatbots need guardrails too, starting with the App Store Accountability Act.

The data are in: Trump Admin is saving taxpayers billions while achieving universal connectivity. The Benefit of the Bargain reforms brought funding in line with today’s realities, stretched dollars further, and avoided harmful market distortions.
Benefit of the Bargain BEAD reforms, led by @ArielleRothNTIA, removed unnecessary regulation and excessive costs.
Critics predicted disaster, but the data say otherwise.
Most locations will see fiber and the agency is adjusting to new market realities.

AI companies do have substantial liability exposure under current law (more than they seem to think), but there are gaps in the current liability regime that @RepLoriTrahan's CLAIM Act, which I helped design, would close. I explain in this episode of the Center Edge podcast.

Australia's national broadcaster says OpenAI and Anthropic bypassed its robots.txt opt-out, an industry standard meant to allow publishers to block AI scraping without their consent.
AI companies often argue against bolstering copyright protection by pointing to this standard.

In a competitive market, app stores that let kids download nudify apps would risk losing families' trust and business, forcing companies to compete on child safety. But with 2 companies controlling the software on over 99% of American smartphones, there's nowhere else to go.
NEW: Users as young as 13 can access dozens of nudify apps on both Apple and Google phones, even when parental controls are enabled, a new TTP report finds. techtransparencyproject.org/articles/how-a…
